So much for the idea that long hair is the only way to look glamorous at 63. Demi Moore has just shown that a shorter, face-framing style can be every bit as refined and perhaps even more youthful.
The actress, known for her iconic dark tresses, debuted a sleek bob at New York Fashion Week yesterday, giving the much-loved cut a polished, grown-up update. Precise, healthy-looking and beautifully simple, Demi's hair is proof that the right cut can instantly refresh your look without sacrificing elegance.
Demi has been switching between flowing mermaid hair and a bob over recent months, but her new hair is her shortest hair in years – and in our view, the chicest.
The secret is in the shape. 'For someone who has worn very long hair for many years, going shorter can completely change the energy of the look while still feeling sophisticated and feminine,' says Fabian Lliguin, co-founder and hair expert at Rahua. A softly face-framing finish keeps the style flattering and youthful, while a glossy, healthy texture gives it that unmistakable red-carpet polish.
Why is this such a chic and flattering update to Demi’s hair?
Demi Moore’s long hair is such an iconic part of her beauty look, so seeing her embrace a far shorter, face-framing shape creates an instant transformation. ‘A bob brings the eye towards the face and jawline, which can feel very fresh and modern, while the clean shape gives the hair a sense of strength and density,’ adds Fabian. ‘I particularly like the simplicity of this shape. It doesn’t rely on complicated layers or excessive styling, the beauty is in the precision of the cut and the healthy-looking shine.’
Why is Demi's bob a good option for fine or mature hair?
As hair naturally becomes finer and more delicate with age, the right cut can make all the difference. ‘Very long hair can sometimes make fine hair appear flatter or less dense because there is so much weight pulling it down,’ explains Fabian. ‘A well-cut bob removes some of that weight and allows the hair to sit closer to its natural density, which can make it look fuller and healthier.’ Rather than relying on excessive layers or heavily thinned ends, he recommends a strong, clean perimeter to create the appearance of density. The result is hair that feels lighter, healthier and full of movement.
What to ask for at the salon
If you’re tempted to recreate Demi’s polished bob, Fabian recommends asking for a clean, face-framing shape that sits around the chin or just below it. ‘The most important thing is to personalise the length,’ he says. ‘The right bob should follow your jawline and complement your features rather than simply copying a photograph.’ Strong, blunter lines are particularly flattering on finer hair, while the exact length should be adapted to your hair’s natural texture, density and movement. Bring a picture of Demi’s style for inspiration, but let your stylist tailor the finish to you.
How to style it
The secret to a glossy bob starts before the blow-dry. ‘Preparation is just as important as the styling,’ says Fabian. He recommends beginning with clean hair, applying styling products sparingly and using a round brush to smooth the hair around the shape of the head. Finish with a cool shot to help set the style, then add a small amount of lightweight oil through the ends for shine. ‘I like to keep the finish polished but not overly rigid,’ he says. ‘The goal is hair that looks healthy, glossy and touchable rather than heavily styled.’
For a bob that looks light, glossy and full of movement, Fabian recommends starting with a shampoo that cleanses thoroughly without weighing the hair down. ‘Rahua Rebalance Shampoo gives the scalp a fresh, balanced cleanse while leaving the hair feeling clean and lightweight,’ he says.
The formula contains calendula, magnesium chloride and omega-rich sacha inchi to help refresh the scalp while replenishing moisture. Fabian suggests massaging a small amount into thoroughly wet hair, concentrating first on the scalp, then rinsing and repeating if needed. Follow with conditioner through the lengths and ends for a soft, polished foundation before blow-drying.
