I don’t wear dresses often, but when I caught sight of the Naomi dress by Nobody’s Child, I was intrigued enough by it to make my way to my nearest store to try one on.
Why? I’m looking for a fabulous dress to wear to my birthday party next month, and in the Naomi I instantly recognised details, such as the folding details on the short sleeves, and the carefully placed ruching that snakes down the ribcage to create a slimming effect, as the same design tricks used by luxury designers including Victoria Beckham.
These details, plus a concealed zip and lining, are what makes the dress universally flattering across all the size ranges, and the Naomi comes in sizes 4 to 18 and in colours including navy, yellow and pink. In a size range this broad, I suspected they would work on me, too, a size 10.
In addition to the arm-minimising sleeves, and the cleverly positioned slimming stitching through the torso, I discovered even more great things about this dress when I tried it on.
It flares out from the waistline, and this, combined with 100% recycled polyester fabric with a silky swing to it, means it also creates a slimming effect across tummy hips and thighs. In total, I'd say this dress visually shaved a dress size from my usual size 10.
I’ll be honest, I instantly felt good in the Naomi dress, trying it it made me want to get my make-up and heels on and have some fun. And, bonus, the size eight fitted better than the ten, but I suspect that’s because it didn’t need to fit my lower half.
My taste definitely lands in the designer side of life, but my budget does not. The closest Victoria Beckham dresses to the Nobody’s Child Naomi include the Eve layered gathered floral-print satin midi dress at £990, and the gathered crepe midi dress at £850.
The Naomi in electric blue is £110 – well it’s a genuine no-brainer, right? But I won’t be going for the blue – red is my colour.
