There’s no doubt about it - we are in a golden age of high street fashion collaborations. John Galliano’s Zara collection – the first of a two-year partnership – arrives this September. On May 7, Stella McCartney’s new collaboration with H&M, is set for release. Last week John Lewis launched its excellent collaboration with the designer Rejina Pyo.
But – surprise! – a few days ago, Victoria Beckham announced a 38-piece collection for Gap, and it's released today.
It’s a collaboration no one was expecting, and if there’s one thing you need before shopping a designer partnership like this, one that is likely to sell out quickly, it pays to plan ahead.
Having seen it, I can say that Victoria Beckham’s take on Gap is full of precisely designed, stylish and polished basics that will elevate your everyday style.
As you’d expect from Gap, the focus is on refined versions of the building blocks of a modern wardrobe: denim, khaki, T-shirts, button-up shirts, relaxed workout wear and high quality branded fleeces.
My advice, though? Look beyond the branded items, towards Victoria Beckham’s design signatures, which are hiding in plain sight within the range.
These include carefully cut white shirts, elegant wide-leg tailored trousers, and two long T-shirt dresses, a style Victoria herself often wears as evening wear, here in soft, summery cotton.
Other items to note, and likely to sell out fast, are the ‘Arc’ curved-leg jeans in white or mid-blue.
Perhaps the best investments are the jackets. The elegantly cut trenchcoat and neat bomber look far more expensive than they are. The khaki green parka - or dare we say, anorak? - is something Victoria herself would wear to stroll around the lanes near her home in the Cotswolds, and I fully expect this to sell out first.
The white 'Arc' jeans and white shirt are top of my personal wishlist, the rest of the pieces I'd buy first, are here.
