I'd be lying if I didn't say that balloon trousers didn't sound intimidating. The name alone suggests a silhouette best suited to runways and street style rather than real life, but as it turns out, there are more wearable takes of the trend on the high street.
Case in point: M&S's Pure Linen Balloon Trousers. Much like the classic balloon style, the shape of these trousers are voluminous, but not in a difficult, 'how-do-I-style-these?' kind of way. Instead, the leg subtly curves out and then tapers at the ankle with unique bow detailing, creating a relaxed balloon silhouette that feels modern without overwhelming your silhouette.
In black linen (another pair comes in white) they look elevated, and easily blend with plenty of wardrobe staples. This, in my opinion, makes them a great piece you'll reach for time and time again once balmier weather arrives - a warm weather workhorse, if you will.
But what truly makes this pair particularly appealing is how flattering and versatile they are. The loose linen fabric gives them easy movement, while the elasticated waistband keeps them comfortable without compromising on shape. And because the trousers are the focal point, wear them with a classic fitted tee, a crisp white shirt or a lightweight knit.
It's unsurprising, that this style has started to dominate style discussions. While wide-leg linen trousers have dominated for seasons, more tapered styles have started to take centre stage. Balloon trousers feel like the fresher, more directional update.
