While I'd like to class myself as a jeans and trousers devotee, you might be surprised to learn that I have a very soft spot for a midi skirt. Not only are they incredibly chic - a point recently proven by the ruffled midi skirt in Uniqlo's latest collection with Cecilie Bahnsen (I picked one up myself) - but they're also surprisingly practical.

Unlike a maxi skirt, a midi won't overwhelm your frame, which is great if you're like me and have shorter legs. Shopping for jeans usually means heading straight to the petite section, so I can appreciate not having to worry about excess fabric dragging along the floor or getting caught under a pair of my go to Mary Janes. Plus, they offer just enough coverage to protect your legs from harmful UV rays during the balmy summer months.

That's why, when I spotted M&S's adorable ditsy floral midi skirt, I was immediately faced with the challenge of convincing myself not to spend another £40 on yet another swishy staple.

What caught my eye about this skirt was how it nails plenty of summer's biggest trends in one easy to wear style. Its kitschy yet cute floral print motif, similar to designs at luxury labels - was the first thing I noticed, followed by ruffles and tiered detailing, which add movement and an extra dose of femininity.

The best part? Styling the skirt is easy: simply pair it with the matching top, which features the same floral pattern, for an easy breezy outfit formula. All that's left to do is choose your footwear. While we're still battling rainy days, I'll be pairing mine with knee high boots. Then, once the sun decides to stick around for longer than a week, I'll swap them for a pair of toe post sandals.
