Can I say it? I’m missing my jeans. As a self-confessed denim fanatic, the heatwave has ruled out most of my wardrobe. But, fellow denim lovers, don’t worry — all is not lost. My go-to summer solution? A brilliant denim maxi skirt and Next has one for just £34.

The beauty of a denim skirt is that it gives me the denim fix I’ve been craving, is just as easy to style and is far airier than my favourite pair of jeans — and, dare I say, looks even better.

I’ll admit, I already have a few denim maxi skirts in my wardrobe, each in a different shape. Every time I wear one, I get compliments (and is there any better feeling than that?). Safe to say, Next’s version will be joining the collection.

Beyond making me feel like Phoebe Buffay, I’m a firm believer that nothing is quite as flattering as a maxi skirt. Next’s denim version sits high on the waist to define the silhouette before falling into a softly flared A-line shape that skims the ankles.

Not only is the relaxed shape flattering, but it also gives the skirt plenty of movement, making it incredibly comfortable to wear throughout the day.

Despite the affordable price tag, no detail has been spared. The double button lends a 1970s-inspired feel, while the panel details on the front bring it up to date, giving it a modern structure.

As a member of the petite club, I always appreciate it when clever design details help create the illusion of longer proportions and that’s exactly what the panelled construction does. The vertical seams draw the eye up and down, creating an elongated silhouette.

As someone with a hefty denim collection, I can confidently say that a mid-wash blue like this is the hardest-working hue in my wardrobe. It feels fresh and bright in summer, yet transitions effortlessly into autumn and winter, too.

Just as easy to style as jeans, the outfit possibilities are endless. Right now, I’m wearing mine with pretty blouses, Mary Jane flats and my favourite pair of oval sunglasses. Equally, the skirt will dress up even a plain, basic tee. Come autumn, I’ll trade my lighter layers for a chunky knit and biker boots – both chic, hardworking formulas.
