I’ll be the first to admit, I’m a bit of a knitwear fanatic. As soon as September arrives, I start searching for the perfect cosy jumper, and a classic cable knit is always at the top of my list. This year, Next has a stylish version for just £28.
But what exactly makes the cable knit such an enduring wardrobe hero? It’s all in the texture. The chunky, tactile knit lends it a more elevated, considered feel than your average jumper.
The cable knit’s appeal is nothing new, it has been a staple for decades. However, it was Ralph Lauren who helped cement its status as a preppy wardrobe icon, so it’s no surprise to see it return to the high street year after year.
Next's take on the classic cable knit is relaxed and modern, thanks to its oversized, boxy fit. It hangs effortlessly off the shoulders, lending it a laid-back feel.
The mid-length cut, paired with the cable detailing, creates a flattering effect - which, as someone who's 5'3", I can certainly get behind.
If, like me, you have a fuller bust, you’ll know that oversized knits can sometimes feel a little too bulky, disguising your shape in the process. This is where a V-neckline like this becomes particularly handy, it works hard to add balance and create a more flattering silhouette.
One thing I love about shopping at Next is that when I find a great piece, it usually comes in a range of colours. And when you find a style that ticks all of your boxes, why stop at just one?
Personally, I’m eyeing up the pistachio green shade. It feels right for autumn, but especially refreshing. The ecru and black versions are equally brilliant, and are timeless classics that will fit in seamlessly with any wardrobe.
Or, if this is the season you're looking to embrace more pattern, consider the pink striped version instead. Featuring olive, red and brown horizontal stripes, it only adds to the cable knit's timeless, preppy appeal.
The jumper does feature wool in its blend; however, it’s worth noting that it’s predominantly made from recycled polyester and acrylic. It might not have the same feel as a pure wool knit, but this makes it an affordable way to tap into the classic style. With the right care, it should still be a reliable staple for years to come.
One of the best things about a cable knit is its versatility. Jeans are the obvious pairing, and they'll never fail you. Personally, I’ll be embracing the heritage appeal by styling it with a pleated midi skirt and loafers. Or, experiment with layering by wearing an asymmetric lace cami underneath, allowing it to peek out, just as Next’s styling team has done.
