It's hard to deny the popularity of the barn jacket over the past few years. The coat with the coveted cord collar has well and truly done the fashion rounds, so I couldn't possibly imagine there being any reason to update it. That was, until, I came across a particular design from M&S.
Of course, you've seen the style updated before, but mainly for fashion purposes. The contrasting collar has popped up on trench coats for a longer, Doctor Who-esque take on the heritage style, while denim versions have made an appearance for a Western spin on the British classic. What I wasn't expecting, though, was a padded version - led by M&S's Cord Collar Short Padded Jacket.
There's plenty that's brilliant about this jacket, but let's start with the obvious: the padded take on the classic barn style. Incredibly cosy, it's designed with M&S's Thermowarmth technology, making it a great choice for the cooler months - and even cosier when layered over fluffy knitwear.
It also features bomber style ribbed hems on the body and sleeves, giving it a subtle blouson shape that feels as though it has taken inspiration from designer favourites such as Chloé.
And, of course, the biggest update of the season comes courtesy of its burgundy colour - a shade that has been synonymous with autumn for decades. It leans slightly brighter in direct sunlight, but it's still muted enough to work effortlessly with plenty of pieces already hanging in your wardrobe.
Think tailored separates for a contrasting outfit formula that genuinely works, finished with chic ballet flats and a chocolate brown leather look bag. Alternatively, opt for dark indigo jeans for an effortlessly polished outfit you'll keep returning to.
