Style moves in mysterious ways. Take the case of the humble Henley T-shirt. Every man on earth seems to own at least one of these classic tops, but women haven’t given them a second thought as a wardrobe staple.
Until now, that is. Because this former British rowing uniform and military staple is fast becoming the polished T-shirt option of the season for women.
It’s easy to see why. First familiarity. If you regularly wear a polo T-shirt or rubgy top, a Henley T-shirt is a collarless yet similarly versatile version. One you can wear everyday, and slot into multiple outfits to deliver a polished rather than sporty finish.
Second, the cute vertical line of tiny buttons. This is where the magic happens. They draw the eye, create the impression of slimness, and allow you to play with the styling.
M&S have clearly got the Henley memo, first they released cute Henley jumpers. Today they released a range of slim-fit ribbed and plain Henley T-shirts in chocolate brown, marl grey, cream and burgundy in sizes from small to extra large.
Their versions fulfill the sleek chic brief prevailing this autumn.
Wear a ribbed one with dark indigo jeans, slipper loafers and a cropped jacket, to make a casual outfit more chic. Style a plain one under a sharp blazer and tailored wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt for a relaxed yet polished office look. They are that versatile.
In my book, though, the best thing about a Henley T-shirt is the buttons. Will you button up, or undo a few?
My advice? Always undo the top three buttons. It softens the neckline, shows a hint of collarbone, and, above all, it looks chic and confident. Add one to your style and you'll see.
All this from one simple T-shirt? Don't be surprised if you end up wearing yours every day.
