Move over IKEA meatballs. The iconic Swedish snack from the furniture giant is getting its first big shake-up in more than 40 years, and it’s arriving just in time for National Meatball Day.
Launching on Monday 9 March is IKEA’s first ever Meatball Sub, a playful reimagining of the classic dish that’s been a staple of the IKEA café experience for decades. For the first time ever, the famous meatballs are leaving the plate and becoming a handheld snack. The new sub combines IKEA’s signature juicy meatballs with tart lingonberry jam and tangy gherkins, all tucked inside a soft bun. It brings together those instantly recognisable Swedish flavours, but with a very British lunchtime twist.
IKEA is encouraging fans to ditch the fork and knife for this one, turning their most famous menu item into something you can grab and eat on the go. And when most lunchtime options seem to be creeping past the £6 mark, this feels like a very welcome change.
In true IKEA fashion, the price is very affordable. The Meatball Sub will cost just 95p for IKEA Family members (membership is free to join, FYI), and it will be available in stores nationwide. There is a small catch though. This is a limited-time launch, running from 9 March until 30 April. So once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Considering IKEA sells an astonishing 1.4 billion meatballs globally every year, this small but mighty menu change feels like a pretty big moment for the brand, and we know that it will certainly make the endless maze of navigating an IKEA store that much more enjoyable.
