You can't rely on the general public for anything, and a contestant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? learned that the hard way during the final episode of the series on Sunday (January 6).
Oli from Canterbury found himself crashing out of the competition and losing £93,000, all because he listened to the audience...
After managing to win £125,000 during his time on the show, he was then faced with a question worth £250,000 and, although he had the option to walk away with the money he'd already won, he chose to take his chances instead.
He was asked which novel begins with the words: "3 May. Bistritz. Left Munich at 8:35PM."
The options were Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, Dracula, Heart of Darkness and Frankenstein.
Admitting that he hadn't read any of the novels and had absolutely no idea what the answer was, Oli soon opted to use his 50/50 lifeline, which left him with Tinker Tailor Solider Spy and Dracula.
What to read next
Still uncertain of the answer, Oli was forced to ask for the audience's help. They overwhelmingly voted for Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, with 81% convincing him to select that as his final answer.
Sure, that sounds like a good bet, but host Jeremy Clarkson then simply replied: "It's the wrong answer. What an absolute nightmare, it's Dracula."
The gamble meant that Oli then lost all the money he'd won since setting his safety net, losing a massive £93,000 to walk away with £32,000 – which, to be fair, is still a decent amount of money.
It could have been so much more though, if it wasn't for the pesky audience.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? returns ITV for a new series in March 2019.
