More than 20 years after the original blockbuster movie, Shrek, hit cinemas in 2001, a fifth Shrek movie is reportedly in the works.
Most excitingly, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all confirmed to reprise their loveable roles as Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona, respectively.
This news comes some 13 years after the fourth film was released, but no suggestions as to the plot line for Shrek 5 have yet been announced.
The film is currently in its early stages of development and production, so we have a bit of a wait on our hands for the fifth instalment in the ogre-based franchise. However, we do know a release date after DreamWorks Animation took to X to announce that Shrek 5 will be released on 1 July 2026 in the US, meaning we can tentatively assume the UK release will also land around, if not on, this date.
Eddie Murphy has even revealed that work has already started on the film, telling Collider that he's been in the recording booth for Shrek 5 in recent months.
What to read next
"We started doing Shrek four or five months ago," he revealed. "I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out."
Murphy also went as far as to reveal that a Donkey spin-off film is also looking quite likely in the near future, following in the (extremely successful) footsteps of the Puss in Boots spin-off movies.
"Donkey’s gonna have his own movie,' the actor confirmed. "We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie]."
