When ITV announces a major new crime drama, you know it's going to be good - and Winter is no exception. For starters, the series stars Richard Armitage, who you’ll know (and probably love) from several Harlan Coben dramas, along with The Split's Annabel Scholey. Then there's the perfect twist at the heart of it - Armitage’s character, Dr Ethan Winter, appears to be a diligent, crime-solving pathologist, but he’s actually hiding a dark secret.
The compelling six-part series takes us to Bristol where Dr Winter and no-nonsense detective Lauren Bell (Scholey) are a crime-fighting team to be reckoned with. There's no crime they can't solve - or so we think. Dr Winter is also secretly carrying out his own investigation concerning a traumatic event from his past - and it's a pursuit that threatens to consume him entirely.
While we patiently wait for Winter to arrive on our screens, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming crime drama, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Winter about?
As we mentioned, the six-part series will introduce us to Dr Ethan Winter (Richard Armitage) whose extraordinary analytical mind and incredible deductive reasoning powers make him one of the most gifted pathologists of his generation. His rare talents perfectly complement DI Lauren Bell (Annabel Scholey), a meticulous detective, who’s just as driven as Dr Winter when working a case. Together they make an unbeatable team, as Dr Winter’s genius and insight into the victims is invaluable to DI Bell and her murder squad detectives.
But there’s a catch: Dr Winter is harbouring a secret of his own. The unsolved murder of someone close to him still haunts his every move, and he’s intent on unofficially investigating the death to bring the murderer to justice. Dr Winter’s personal quest is the thread running through the six-part series, with each episode also featuring its own compelling crime story.
Richard Armitage shared an insight into what viewers can expect from his character, explaining: “Ethan Winter is a compelling character treading the line between diligent professional and reckless maverick. He has a painful secret and a fatalistic self-destruct button over which his finger constantly hovers. I’m thrilled to be returning to ITV.”
Annabel Scholey added: "I am thrilled to be joining ITV and Eagle Eye Drama as part of the Winter team, and to be working alongside the brilliant Richard Armitage on these fantastic scripts. Our characters’ tempestuous relationship will be a total thrill to explore, and I am excited to step into the wonderfully dry shoes of DI Lauren Bell."

What other crime dramas can I watch now?
If you were a fan of The Bridge, we’d strongly recommend The Tunnel, which was based on the Scandi Noir hit. The series follows a team of detectives from the UK and France, who are thrust together to solve a series of gruesome cases, including catching a serial killer. You can watch The Tunnel series 1 on Prime Video. Another crime drama we’d give a 10/10 to is Cuffs. Set in Brighton, the series follows the trials and triumphs of eight police officers and the mix of colourful characters and dramatic incidents makes for extremely entertaining TV. You can watch Cuffs series 1 on Netflix.
