If the idea of a new Harlan Coben thriller fills you with genuine excitement, we’ve got some good news. No, there isn’t another one on the way – yet – but there is a Harlan Coben-esque series we’re confident you’re going to love. Introducing The Devil’s Hour, the creepy mystery thriller coming to ITV that’s even more mind-bending than the likes of Missing You and Fool Me Once.
The series, which premiered on Prime Video four years ago, stars Call the Midwife’s Jessica Raine as Lucy, who keeps waking up every night at exactly 3.33am - in the middle of the so-called Devil's Hour”. Eerie, yes, but things get even more unsettling when we meet her son, Isaac, (Benjamin Chivers), who seems to be suffering from some kind of emotional disorder, and Lucy discovers that she’s somehow connected to a chain of murders.
Ahead of its arrival on ITV, here’s everything you need to know about The Devil’s Hour, including the full plot, cast and when you can watch it.
What is The Devil’s Hour about?
As we mentioned, the series, which first aired in 2022, follows Lucy (played by Jessica Raine), a woman who wakes up every night at exactly 3:33am, the so-called “Devil’s Hour” when unexplainable things can occur. When we meet her, a number of unexplainable things are happening in Lucy’s life: her eight-year-old son, Isaac (Benjamin Chivers) is withdrawn and emotionless (and rather creepy). Her mother, Sylvia (Barbara Marten) speaks to empty chairs, and Lucy’s house is haunted by eerie visions and strange events.
Now, her name is inexplicably connected to a string of brutal murders in the area, and, no spoilers, but the answers that have evaded her all these years are finally about to come into focus. The series also stars Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi as a mysterious and reclusive nomad, who’s driven by a murderous obsession. He becomes the prime target of a police manhunt led by compassionate detective Ravi Dhillon, played by Nikesh Patel.
The first series proved so popular that a second was released in 2024 and a third is expected to arrive at some point in 2026. Star Jessica Raine told Digital Spy about her own reaction to watching the first series back, explaining: "I got drawn in really slowly, and then was genuinely quite freaked out by some aspects of it," she said.
"Benjy Chivers, who plays Isaac, his emotionlessness and his blankness was genuinely quite chilling at times, because Benjy's not like that. He's already a great actor. He can just switch it on and off. That in itself is quite impressive. It was really affecting and sad and freaky when he would just monotone-repeat what you said with nothing at all behind the eyes. I found that really chilling.”
