If it’s been a while since you had something of a crime drama obsession, don’t despair because we’re about to introduce you to a new one. The Mallorca Files is one of those fantastic series that can make a bad day better with the switch of a button (that’s play, if you’re wondering) and if you’re a fan of Death in Paradise, you’ll adore it even more.
Set in the sunny climes of Mallorca, the BBC series features a very watchable crime-solving partnership between Detective Miranda Blake (Elen Rhys) and Max Winter (Julian Looman). The pair are about as different as can be and yet none of that stops them from solving crimes in the Spanish sunshine.
With all three series now available to stream, here’s everything you need to know about The Mallorca Files before you tune in, including the plot, cast, trailer and where to watch it.
What is The Mallorca Files about?
The series, which first aired on BBC One in 2019, takes us to - you guessed it – Mallorca. There, we meet Detective Miranda Blake (Elen Rhys), an ambitious introvert who lives by the rules. Her German partner Max Winter (Julian Looman), however, takes an approach to policing that’s based on gut-instinct and he has very little interest in process. But despite being opposites, they make a formidable crime-solving team.
Over the course of three series, the pair investigate all manner of crimes - think high-stakes adventures, treasure hunts, kidnappings, and murders. The joy of the series isn’t merely watching their investigations unfold, but in enjoy the sun-soaked scenery along the way!
Star Elen Rhys, who plays Miranda, explained in a BBC interview: It’s great writing. Dan's (Sefton) scripts have everything. They interweave drama, comedy and action. They tick all the boxes. They have got it all. It’s such an exciting project. I’m delighted to be a part of it.”
Her co-star Julian Looman added: “When I read the script, what I really liked about it was the Moonlighting aspect. These are not only crime stories, but they are also about an ongoing relationship. That's something the audience will really warm to. You see Max and Miranda's relationship develop, and you don't know where it's going.”

Yes – if you’re a fan of Death in Paradise and its sun-soaked spin-offs, you’ll enjoy The Mallorca Files. It’s the sort of series that doesn’t take itself too seriously, blending genuinely likeable characters with glorious backdrops and investigations you can’t help but feel heavily invested in. How can I watch The Mallorca Files?
Good news - The Mallorca Files is available to watch now on Prime Video.
What other crime dramas can I watch now?
For another brilliantly mismatched crime-solving duo, we’d recommend McDonald & Dodds. The series introduces us to the smart and ambitious DCI McDonald (Tala Gouveia) and the shy but quietly brilliant DS Dodds (Jason Watkins) who have rather a lot of whodunnits to solve. All four series of McDonald & Dodds are available to watch now on ITVX. For something newer, we’d suggest Mint. The series which has just landed on the BBC, shows us the inner workings of a notorious crime family, through the eyes of the only daughter Shannon (Emma Laird).
