The series takes us to Glasgow where we meet Michelle (Vinette Robinson) and Chris O’Neill (Kevin McKidd), parents who are torn apart when their teenage daughter, Olivia, goes missing. As the pair do everything they can to get to find her, they find themselves uncovering a web of corruption that extends far beyond their own family.
Intrigued to find out more? With all episodes available to watch now on ITVX, here’s everything you need to know about Six Four including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Six Four about?
Inspired by Hideo Yokohama’s bestselling novel of the same name, the four-part series swaps Japan for the streets of Glasgow. There, we're introduced to Chris O'Neill (Kevin McKidd), a serving police detective, and Michelle O’Neill’s (Vinette Robinson), a former undercover officer, whose 18-year-old daughter, Olivia, (Eubha Akilade), goes missing.
When the pair are asked to identify the body of a young girl, it fortunately turns out not to be Olivia, and the troubled parents are subsequently led on two different paths on the quest for answers. Michelle heads to London, returning to a dark criminal underworld she escaped years before. Meanwhile, Chris is sent on a historic trail when a journalist, Samantha Wishart (Selin Hizli) approaches him with a startling revelation about an unresolved missing persons case from 16 years ago. The missing child is called Julie Mackie, the daughter of former lawyer, Jim Mackie (James Cosmo), who worked for the Scottish National Party and it seems fatal mistakes were covered-up in her disappearance.
And that's not the end of the twists. When the daughter of Scotland’s Justice Minister, who's on the cusp of an election victory, is kidnapped, it has unnerving similarities to the Mackie case. Is the past repeating itself, or is the explosive truth of what really happened to Julie Mackie about to be revealed?
What to read next
Kevin McKidd told ITV how playing Chris got him out of a personal and professional rut. “I think it's always compelling to find a character, and Chris kind of embodies that, of somebody who puts himself into jeopardy, into danger, into real threat, to try and get to the truth of the matter," he said.
"Chris is kind of the small man, really, trying to fight a big system. A big system that's built on lies and backhanders and payoffs and hush money and political pressure and all that kind of murky stuff that's the glue to that sort of political world.”
