It’s 1994 in South Africa, a nation that’s still reeling from the effects of apartheid as it enters into democracy. The 11-part series, which first aired in its home country in 2024, tells the story of Micki Pistorius, a former journalist turned psychological profiler, who’s set to work in a male-dominated police force as an unsettling succession of serial killers grips the nation. But how will her unconventional methods fare in the ultra-macho world of policing?

The series is a dramatisation of Micki’s autobiography of the same name, and Game Of Thrones’ Charlotte Hope takes on the captivating lead role. The series kicks off with the hunt for a notorious serial killer, the Station Strangler, a serial murderer who’s left a trail of 22 dead boys in his wake. The series also unravels other chilling cases, such as the murders of sex workers across Cape Town and The Saloon Killer – a prolific murderer named after the ‘saloon’ rifle he used.

Charlotte opened up about what drew her to the challenging role. ‘It’s always a challenge and a privilege to recreate a real life character and Micki is no exception,’ she told the Hollywood Reporter. ‘Micki herself told me that psychologists and actors have very similar psychometric profiles and it’s such an honor to dive into the mind of this powerful and trailblazing woman, as she in turn dives into the minds of the many characters that bind this dark and fascinating world together.’

Is Catch Me A Killer any good?

Yes – while it certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted, the real-life aspect of the show is fascinating although, of course, harrowing. While Charlotte’s portrayal of Micki is brilliant and perceptive, what sets this apart from other crime thrillers is the psychological aspect of how Micki delves into the twisted minds of the killers to get to the bottom of the cases. However, as well as not being for those averse to violence, it may not be for ex-smokers either – there’s rarely a scene where Micki doesn’t have a cigarette on the go!

For something more atmospheric, but equally dark, we’d recommend Hellground. When Dr Fabian Lambert (August Wittgenstein) moves to a sleepy village in Germany’s Black Forest, a series of mysterious murders unfold – but are they connected to his arrival? Hellground is available to watch now on Channel 4. Alternatively, If you haven’t yet started watching Channel 5’s psychological thriller The Fortune, we’d highly recommend it. The series introduces us to Amanda Blakefield (Eleanor Tomlinson), who leads a pretty unremarkable life with her husband, Jimmy (Matthew Lewis), and son, Luke (James Younger), until a stranger hands her a whopping inheritance of £2 million. You can watch The Fortune now on Channel 5.
