If The Split is on your list of favourite legal dramas, you’ve probably searched high and low for a series that’s just as good. And if you still haven’t found one, you probably haven’t seen Fisk yet. The dream legal drama introduces us to middle-aged lawyer Helen Tudor-Fisk (Kitty Flanagan) who's forced to start life over in a new city - and in a new law firm - after a fall from grace, and it’s just as watchable as The Split, if not more so.

The series, which first aired in Australia five years ago, is funny, relatable and, in our humble opinion, thoroughly enjoyable. In her new job as Gruber & Gruber which specialises in wills and probate, Helen finds herself faced with everything from family feuds to money squabbles, which might ordinarily make for a rather stressful series – but the deadpan humour and brilliantly awkward moments mean it’s quite the opposite.

With three series of Fisk now available to stream on ITV, here’s everything you need to know about the series before you tune in, including the plot, cast and release date.

What is Fisk about?

The Australian sitcom, which first aired in 2021, follows the titular middle-aged lawyer Helen Tudor-Fisk (Kitty Flanagan) who leaves Sydney for Melbourne as she takes a job at law firm Gruber & Gruber, which specialises in wills and probate. Helen’s relocation wasn’t entirely planned; it was, in fact, the result of both the breakdown of her marriage and a professional fall from grace.

Now, she’s in a quaint suburb where she hopes to start over both personally and professionally. What makes the show both funny and extremely watchable is the cast of characters we meet along the way, including siblings Ray (Marty Sheargold) and Roz (Julia Zemiro), who run Gruber & Gruber, as well as their assistant of sorts, “webmaster” George (Aaron Chen).

Over the course of three series, we see the team deal with everything from scandals and celebrities to shock departures. We also witness Helen’s rise to become a partner at the firm, which means more responsibility – and a lot more drama heading her way.

What to read next

Kitty Flanagan, who also created the show, put the success of the show down to both the characters and relationships within it. "I guess the world is realistic and relatable," she told ABC. "The characters in our show obviously exist the world over, even if they have a different accent or speak a different language."

"Without those people [Marty Sheargold, Julia Zemiro and Aaron Chen], we wouldn't have had the show. It's a little bit of lightning in a bottle that you get the right people together and the four of us just clicked."

Is Fisk any good?

Yes – as far as legal dramas are concerned, it really is the only thing that even comes close to the brilliance of The Split. What gives it an edge is the humour that’s woven through every episode: think Schitt’s Creek but even funnier. Fans have called the series “pure gold”, “consistently funny” and “a hidden gem of a show” and we absolutely agree with them.

For a fantastic series rooted in real-life, we’d recommend I Fought the Law. The heartbreaking series stars Sheridan Smith as Ann Ming, the heartbroken mother who campaigned to change the Double Jeopardy Law and ensure her daughter’s murderer was convicted. You can watch I Fought the Law now on ITVX. You’ll find another chilling turn of events (though fictional this time) in The Trial. Parents Dione (Claire Skinner) and David Sinclair (Ben Miles) find themselves on trial for a crime their daughter has supposedly committed thanks to a radical new law that holds parents accountable. The Trial is available to watch on Channel 5.
