While we love an edge-of-your-seat thriller, sometimes the only remedy for a long day is snuggling up on the sofa with a cosy crime drama. If you’ve already worked your way through Agatha Christie’s spin-offs and solved the mysteries of The Marlow Murder Club, Mrs Sidhu Investigates is a detective drama you can’t beat.
Introducing Mrs Sidhu (Meera Syal), a woman of many talents. She’s renowned in her affluent community for her Indian catering company, but when she’s not in the kitchen, you’ll find her catching killers – often cracking cases before the police. Mrs Sidhu’s sleuthing takes us on a twisty journey, kicking off with the discovery of two bodies in a high-end health club. It’s truly a superb series cosy crime fans will love.
With Mrs Sidhu Investigates now available to watch in full on Channel 4, here’s everything you need to know about the series before you watch it, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Mrs Sidhu Investigates about?
The four-part series, adapted from the successful BBC Radio 4 series of the same name, takes us to the seemingly sleepy county of Berkshire, where an unlikely crime-busting coalition forms between Mrs Sidhu (Meera Syal), a high-end caterer, and the world-weary Detective Chief Inspector Burton (Line Of Duty’s Craig Parkinson). We meet the recently widowed Mrs Sidhu as she’s trying to juggle the demands of running her own business and encouraging her wayward son, Tez (DCI Burton), to find his calling in life. As if her plate wasn’t stacked enough, her cooking gigs end up landing her at the centre of murder cases.
The drama kicks off with the discovery of two bodies in a high-end health club. Despite her knack for sleuthing, she tries to stay out of the way – until her niece becomes the prime suspect. DCI Burton is reluctant to listen to Mrs Sidhu’s theories, but she soon proves herself an invaluable asset to the team and untangles a complicated web of business secrets, feuds and love affairs.
The rest of the series sees Mrs Sidhu unwrap a plethora of mysteries through her catering work – and here’s a quick whistlestop tour of what to look forward to. In the second episode she works on the set of a fantasy TV show and one of the lead characters is murdered, mirroring the plot of the show. In the third episode, an in-house catering job at a fancy tech company goes awry when the CEO is murdered. And the series concludes dramatically when Mrs Sidhu is hired to cater a boxing match in a luxury manor and the boxer is kidnapped and held to ransom.
