What does one wear to attend Wimbledon? It’s a big question, but Dame Mary Berry has the answer. For the first day of the tennis event, the iconic baker took a leaf out of the Princess of Wales’ book, wearing a light pink dress with a very subtle polka dot pattern – so on trend.
Dame Mary Berry arrived at Wimbledon with her daughter, Annabel Bosher, also wearing polka dots. Mary’s dress is the Lucie gown by Holland Cooper, a designer the dame has loved for decades – she’s even created multiple themed collections with the brand, handpicking her favourite pieces for tea parties and dinners. The pink Lucie dress was of course one of her top selections.
This is actually a rewear for Dame Mary, as she previously wore this exact dress for this year’s BAFTA Television Awards, where she received the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship in recognition of her contribution to television. The gown is still available to buy from the Holland Cooper website for £299. It’s described as a ‘refined midi dress designed for elegance and comfort’.
We can see why Mary loves it enough to wear the dress twice. It’s got a smart, flattering design with a V neck, button-front detailing, and sheer sleeves – plus, even better, pockets. It’s tricky to make out in photos, but the fabric does have a soft white polka dot.
It’s remarkably similar to a dress Catherine, Princess of Wales, has also reworn to multiple occasions – including Wimbledon, back in 2021. A full-circle Royal reference moment. You might remember Kate’s take on blush pink for Wimbledon; a midi with a similar full-skirt and puff-sleeved design by Beulah. Like Mary Berry’s, Catherine’s dress also has buttons down the front and a cinched in waist.
We’re not surprised to see the pair twinning, style-wise. Mary Berry is good friends with the Princess of Wales, and has frequently worn pieces that wouldn’t be out of place in Catherine’s wardrobe. The pals seem to share a love for both pink and polka dots – just last month Dame Mary Berry wore a pink polka dot dress to the Chelsea Flower Show, while Catherine wore a red dress with both polka dots and hearts by Rodarte for the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK in early June. Mary has also recently worn a navy blue polka dot dress that was very much like one Kate wore to a previous Wimbledon, and that she evidently liked so much she dressed Princess Charlotte in the same style for Wimbledon in 2024.
Expect to see more Royal style references worn by celebrities over the course of Wimbledon. It's a good technique: when you're not sure what to wear for the event, copying the Royal family will always be a safe bet.
