If you’re on the lookout for a new thrilling binge-watch that’ll keep you guessing throughout, we’ve unearthed an exceptional ITV crime drama that’ll leave you speechless. Hollywood royalty Kate Beckinsale leads The Widow, who is on a mission to discover what happened to her husband – and we think it’s the best series since The Missing, which, coincidentally, comes from the same writers.

It’s no wonder then that The Widow has a similarly gripping plot: a twisty missing-person investigation that spans years and countries. We are introduced to the grieving Georgia (Kate Beckinsale), who flies out to the Congo to uncover the mysteries behind her husband’s disappearance there three years earlier. What she discovers is a web of lies and corruption that’ll leave you speechless.

With the series available to watch now, here’s everything you need to know about The Widow, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.

The eight-part series, which first aired in 2019, introduces us to widow Georgia (Katie Beckinsale) who lives in seclusion in the Brecons Beacons trying to get over the death of her husband Will (Matthew Le Nevez), an aid-worker who died in a plane crash three years earlier in Congo. While watching a news report that shows riots across Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, she’s certain she sees her supposedly dead husband in the footage, triggering a thrilling journey to Africa.

Upon arriving, George gets old friend Emmanuel (Jacky Ido) and Will’s boss (Alex Kingston) to help – but she still faces a number of obstacles. She’s exposed to the corrupt world of coltan mining, war and even faces an assassination attempt. As she treads this rocky path of political corruption and violence, will she ever learn what happened to Will?

Yes – as we mentioned, it’s the best series since The Missing, which is by the same writers – the genius brothers Harry and Jack Williams. The series shares similar tropes with Keeley Hawes’ crime drama, including a missing-person mystery, an action-packed international investigation and compelling twists and turns. However, we enjoyed the Congolese backdrop and the insight into the very real social woes that trouble the country.

If you’re in the mood for another thrilling crime drama, we’d point you towards the series From Darkness, which first aired in 2015, where we meet Claire Church (Anne-Marie Duff) a former police officer who’s moved to a remote Scottish island to start a new life. Then, a chilling discovery on her former Manchester patch forces her to confront the past she’s tried so hard to flee from. You can watch From Darkness now on U. If you’re after another British detective drama, we’d recommend The Tower, which stars Gemma Whelan as Detective Sarah Collins, who investigates the dark side of policing. The drama kicks off at a southeast London tower block, where a Metropolitan police officer and 15-year-old refugee have plummeted to their deaths – and it’s the beginning of a catalogue of compelling mysteries.
