If you’re feeling a bit bored with your day-to-day routine and need some excitement in your life, we bring you great news. While we all miss Aidan Turner as Poldark galloping across our screens over rugged Cornish beaches, we have a new medieval woodland adventure that might fill the void. Everyone’s favourite outlaw, Robin Hood (played by Jack Patten) is returning to our screens in MGM+'s hit Robin Hood series - and the second sensational instalment is bringing a 10/10 cast with it. It's set to be unmissable viewing and – dare we say – more watchable than Poldark.
You’d think it was impossible to create a new take on the folklore hero, but MGM+ proved everyone wrong. In case you weren’t aware, the first series of Robin Hood showed us a side to the legend we’d never seen before – Rob, a younger version of the rebel. We also saw new fascinating takes on the Sheriff (Sean Bean) and Marian (Lauren McQueen), who will reprise their roles alongside three new cast members as another exciting battle commences.
Are you ready to return to the forest? With filming for series 2 currently underway, here’s everything you need to know about Robin Hood, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Robin Hood about?
There are so many different iterations of Nottingham’s most famous folklore legend, but MGM+’s retelling shares a different chapter of Robin Hood’s life: his childhood. For those who aren’t aware, in the first 10-part series, which first aired in 2025, Robin Hood, known as Rob (Jack Patten), and his parents, Joan (Anastasia Griffith) and Hugh (Tom Mison), are thrown out of their homes to live in the forest after the Norman Conquest of the Saxons.
Hugh must grapple with losing their land and this loss culminates in a fiery rage that threatens his family’s chance of surviving the brutal land grab. Hugh is eventually publicly executed by the regime, which is Rob’s catalyst to becoming a stalwart rebel.
This retelling is similar to a medieval Romeo And Juliet, but Marian (Lauren McQueen) is so much more than the hero’s damsel in distress. The noblewoman has her own convictions and part to play in the political struggle, all while navigating being under the control of her abusive father, Huntington (Steven Waddington).
Of course, there’s no Robin Hood without the antihero, the Sheriff of Nottingham, portrayed brilliantly by Sean Bean. But he’s no pantomime villain here, rather a complex man struggling with his responsibility to uphold the law and his duties, while trying to father his rebellious daughter, Priscilla (Lydia Peckham).
What is Robin Hood series 2 about?
Series 2 will expand this magical and gritty forest world with the arrival of royalty: King Henry (James Purefoy), whose ruthless vision for England kickstarts the drama. Joining him is his eldest son and rightful heir, Prince Richard (Colin O'Donoghue) – and the threat of a civil war lingers...
Meanwhile, Amaury D’Montfort (Luke Roberts) ambitious nobleman who finds himself at the centre of the Nottingham’s growing power struggle. The official release promises ‘new alliances, formidable enemies and even greater stakes’ and we’re sure it’s going to be every bit as exciting as the first series!

Is Robin Hood any good?
Yes – we couldn’t recommend the first series more; the retelling is bold and fresh, breathing new life into the characters who’ve been adapted countless times. Lauren McQueen’s Marian is smart and savvy, while Sean Bean’s Sheriff is a multifaceted man, rather than a simplistic villain – this evolution made this retelling absolutely gripping.

What other period dramas can I watch now?
If you’re after a historic drama that’s less mythical but just as compelling, we’d recommend Lesley Manville’s period drama Harlots, in which she stars as a merciless brothel owner, Lydia Quigley, in Georgian London. She soon comes up against her longstanding rival, Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton), who opens up shop on her upmarket Soho turf. You can watch Harlots now on U. If you’re after a lighter period drama, we’d recommend Summer’ 36, a French whodunnit that transports you to the dazzling French Riviera in 1936. When a prosecutor dies, four very different women all become prime suspects – and it’s a riveting ride to work out who was actually responsible. Summer’ 36 is available to watch now on Netflix.
