Have you run out of British detective dramas to work through? From Broadchurch to Happy Valley, we’ve cracked cases all over the country and seem to have hit a drought. So, we’ve decided to look further afield for some fabulous drama and, as ever, Channel 4’s Walter Presents has a treasure trove of hidden gems. Our new crime obsession is Rocco Schiavone: Ice Cold Murders – it’s set in a small Alpine town in Italy, and it’s a can’t-miss whodunnit you’ll be hooked on in seconds.
To say the series follows an unconventional lead would be an understatement – Rocco Schiavone is a grumpy yet compelling detective who gets exiled from his beloved city of Rome to a mountain village where he somehow manages to break all the rules while chasing wily killers. He’s corrupt and smokes like a chimney, but his unmistakable charm makes him a magnetic lead…
With the series available to stream now, here’s everything you need to know about Ice Cold Murders, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Ice Cold Murders about?
Based on the bestselling novels by Antonio Manzini, the six-part series, which first aired in Italy in 2016, introduces us to gruff police chief Rocco Schiavone (Marco Giallini), but he’s a long way from his home in Rome. We meet him as he’s exiled for bad behaviour across the country to the snowy mountain village of Aosta, where he must step out of his fancy Roman loafers into snow boots to chase killers.
But Rocco’s no role model policeman – he’s ill-tempered, a charismatic womaniser and despises following the rules. But, despite his unconventional methods (and his excessive smoking), he has a knack for catching killers. Meanwhile, he’s haunted by the loss of his late wife, Marina (Isabella Ragonese).
For a flavour of the action, across the six series Rocco has to crack a plethora of cases, from the suspicious death of a man on a ski slope and the murder of a casino employee to the chilling discovery of children’s bones in the forest… While catching criminals, Rocco himself also dabbles in corruption with his wayward friends: he’s quite the complex character.
