The six-part series follows former city police detective Toby Banks (Toby Truslove) who’s demoted (by his own dad) to the sleepy coastal town of Coolum, Queensland, where he has to take on the night shift. Working out of a ramshackle caravan, he finds himself at the mercy of relentless calls, but they’re not what you’d expect from an emergency call - they’re from a range of people making very wacky claims, including one man who says he’s turning into a chicken.

Soon, he joins forces with an eccentric janitor, Gregor (Barry Crocke), who reveals that when the clock strikes midnight, the town turns spooky. Toby is supernatural sceptic while Gregor is a long-time believer, but together they try and uncover the paranormal going-ons in the community.

In one word, yes! If you enjoy offbeat crime dramas, The Strange Calls is a charming series you’ll want to tune into. In our humble opinion, it’s the perfect comfort-watch - it’s quirky, funny and there’s a warm central partnership between the hapless Toby and eccentric Gregor. To say it’s quirky would be an understatement – the cases involve ghostly cats, mermaids and people turning into chickens. While it’s not a traditional ‘whodunnit’, such as Death In Paradise, it’s perfect for fans of cosy crimes who are after some escapism.

For another cosy detective drama, we’d recommend Elsbeth. This Good Wife spin-off follows Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston), an adept but unconventional attorney who leaves Chicago for the Big Apple and starts working with the New York Police Department. Officially, the pink-clad detective is there to ensure police procedure is being followed, but she has an ulterior motive... Elsbeth is available to watch on NOW. For another fantastic female lead, try Agatha Raisin, where PR hotshot turned private detective Agatha (Shetland’s Ashely Jensen) tackles crimes in the fictional Cotswold village of Carsely. It’s brilliantly fun and charming! Agatha Raisin is available to stream now on Acorn TV via Prime Video.
