September has been a strange month. The in-between weather has made it feel like high summer one day, then drenched us in a downpour the moment we stepped out in our sandals. But, finally, this weird month has come to an end. October is nigh. And, according to Suranne Jones – our authority on most things – that means it’s time to get our knits out.
The Vigil star shared a photo of herself in a very chic all-white ensemble on Instagram, writing: ‘Is it… could it finally be… #sweaterweather’, followed by a string of highly autumnal emoji (falling leaves, scarves, red wine…).
While today the temperatures remain in the high double digits, our answer to Suranne’s question is a resounding yes. Soon – surely – the chill will arrive. So now’s the exact right time to get your knitwear out of storage and pick up some new jumpers while you’re at it.
Which new jumpers should be added to your roster? Suranne makes a very convincing case for a creamy white knit. A jumper in white is not just for Christmas. Or for winter weddings. Whether worn with other white tonal pieces or against brighter coloured items, it’s a staple that will brighten up complexions and look timelessly chic.
We can’t identify the exact jumper Suranne’s wearing, but there are lots of great similar styles on the high street, which we’ve shared ahead. Pick your favourite, add to basket, then wear with everything the second it’s cold enough.
First up, of course M&S has a great option. Its air-yarn crew neck jumper is super soft and lightweight, and has a simple cut that makes it easy to style. If you don’t fancy ivory, the same jumper comes in nine colour options. We like the chartreuse (or moss, as M&S is calling it).
Topshop’s ‘ultimate jumper’ is another great option, with a soft and fluffy texture that feels dreamy against the skin.
And finally, we love the plunge back on this looser-knit jumper from La Redoute.
