best luxury mattresses

Given that we spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping – or at least, trying to – investing in a quality mattress is key.

While a higher price doesn’t always translate to better quality, our experts' best luxury mattresses combine premium natural materials, excellent craftsmanship and innovative tech to help you achieve a great night's sleep.

Whether you’re looking for a supportive pocket sprung design or you prefer plush memory foam for next-level comfort, we’ve tested a range of high-end mattresses from the most popular brands including Simba, Tempur and Hypnos.

These are our top luxury picks for 2026, with detailed reviews below. They will all set you back over £1,200, but it's worth noting that the big brands regularly offer sizeable savings, so there's plenty of opportunity to nab a premium mattress for less.

Don't have over £1,200 but still want a quality buy? Head to our best mattress roundup.

How we test

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our mattress testing process is extremely rigorous. We enlist a panel of testers to sleep on each mattress in their homes for at least six weeks, allowing them to adjust properly to the design. After the trial, we ask them to complete a detailed survey covering every aspect of performance including delivery, comfort, support, temperature regulation and, of course, how well they slept.

To understand how each mattress performs in the long term, we also turn to our extensive reader panel. Nearly 4,000 readers, who had owned their mattress for at least six months, shared their experiences with us, giving us valuable insight into how the mattresses hold up over time.

Finally, our in-house experts collate and carefully analyse all the feedback, and each mattress is awarded an overall score which reflects comfort, performance, durability and long-term satisfaction.

The prices shown are for a standard UK double size.

Pros

  • All our panel slept well and would buy the mattress again
  • Good for temperature regulation and breathability
  • Quiet to lie on

Cons

  • Heavy when getting into place and to rotate and turn

Score: 94/100

Our top-scorer is double sided (so you can flip it to make it last longer) and has multiple layers of pocket springs, moisture wicking, plant-based fibres, and hypoallergenic (and naturally fire resistant) British wool. It’s all encased in a layer of soft viscose, all of which combines to create a mattress that was quiet and breathable for everyone.

Our panel unanimously declared it very comfortable to sleep on and praised the “perfect” level of support for all sleep styles. One person went so far as describing the mattress as “life changing,” delivering a “brilliant night’s sleep”.

As a brand, Hypnos also fared well in our reader survey, with most readers telling us that their mattress kept its high quality over time, was good for back issues, and remained still if their partners fidgeted. In fact, nearly everyone was happy with its comfort over time – a resounding vote of confidence.

Pros

  • Smooth delivery service and clear instructions
  • No lingering smells
  • Comfortable, supportive and temperature-regulating

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Deep sheets required

Score: 93/100

This pocket sprung design – which is handcrafted in the UK – is made from fully traceable British wool with layers of cotton, hemp and flax to help regulate your temperature and prevent overheating. It contains 5,750 pocket springs packed into sealed units to contour to your body for extra comfort and support. It’s also hypoallergenic and free from foam and flame-retardant chemical treatments, meaning fewer potential irritants and a more natural feel.

Testers rated the firm feel, saying it offered plenty of support and pressure relief, whatever their sleeping position. It also ticked the box in terms of temperature regulation, and panellists said they were less disturbed by their partner’s tossing and turning. “I'm a poor sleeper; however, I've been going into a very nice deep sleep with this mattress,” one panel member told us.

It doesn’t require flipping (hurrah!) but rotating the mattress is a two-person job as it’s on the heavier side.

Best luxury mattress for breathability

Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Pro

Pros

  • Breathable design with a removable, washable cover
  • Testers said it offered a good level of comfort and support
  • Smooth delivery experience

Cons

  • Too firm for some
  • A few noticed a ‘new mattress’ smell

Score: 92/100

This hybrid design is a reliable choice for hot sleepers. It features a breathable bamboo cover – bamboo is known for its natural moisture-wicking and antibacterial properties – with a BioCell foam that allows air to circulate freely throughout the night. There are no nasties here either; Panda uses CertiPUR-certified foam, and the product is OEKO-TEX certified, providing independent reassurance that it’s free from harmful substances.

It scored highly in terms of support and pressure relief thanks to the combination of 1,500 pocket springs and layers of orthopaedic-grade memory foam, which contour to the body and keep the shoulders, hips and lower back properly supported overnight.

Most found the medium-firm design “luxuriously comfortable” to sleep on, and said it remained quiet and still, even when snoozing next to fidgety partners. They also praised the smooth delivery service, with clear communication throughout and a stress-free set-up process.

Note, a few said it was firmer and taller than expected, so it may not suit those who prefer a softer, more sink-in sleep surface.

Pros

  • Helped alleviate back pain for some testers
  • Everyone agreed that it’s comfortable, supportive and cushioning
  • Premium build was sturdy and fitted our panel’s bed frames well

Cons

  • Deep design may not suit standard bed sheets
  • Slight smell on arrival

Score: 92/100

With its luxurious look and feel, it’s no surprise that our testers scored this hybrid mattress highly. All Sealy’s mattresses are designed with the help of orthopaedic surgeons, and the combination of foam and spring supported our testers during the night. It even helped ease back pain for some.

The foam provided a welcome softness and cushioned our testers without them sinking into it, meaning it suited sleepers of all styles. Not to mention, our panellists told us it was breathable, and stable when their partners moved.

It’s the deepest mattress on our list, so you may need to invest in new sheets. But given one tester told us it made them “look forward to going to bed a bit earlier”, we’d say that’s a compromise worth making.

We've also tested Sealy's Elevate UltraLux Mattress, which scored 92/100 in our tests.

Harrison Spinks Pure Sensation Pillowtop Mattress

Pros

  • High-quality design, handcrafted in Yorkshire
  • Filled with natural materials
  • Excellent support and spinal alignment

Cons

  • Too firm for some
  • No removable, washable cover

Score: 91/100

Another impressive Harrison Spinks design, this mattress features approximately 8,250 springs alongside natural fillings and a built-in pillowtop layer for a plush feel. Layers of wool, cotton, hemp and flax are designed to promote airflow, while the spring system provides responsive support and helps keep movements from fidgety partners disturbing you at night.

Testers rated its overall comfort and “premium” quality, with several praising how well it balanced firmness with cushioning – especially for those with back issues. As one panellist put it: “It’s soft but firm, which is the perfect combo.” It also scored highly for temperature regulation, keeping everyone cool and comfy overnight.

Note that those who tried the medium option found it firmer than expected and, as it lacks handles, rotation is more of a two-person job. Overall, though, this is a well-crafted, supportive mattress for those who prefer a firmer feel with a touch of luxury.

Dreams TheraPur ActiGel® Glacier 4000 Combination Mattress

Pros

  • The delivery process and communication from the brand was excellent
  • Any ‘new’ smell dissipated quickly
  • Rated highly for comfort and support by our panel

Cons

  • Heavy to turn
  • Some found their sleep was interrupted when their partner moved on the mattress

Score: 89/100

“It was successful at regulating my temperature even in a heatwave,” said one of our happy panellists after testing this cooling mattress from Dreams. It features a graphite knitted cover, which claims to be 1.5°C cooler than a standard mattress, as well as two cooling foam layers to optimise air flow through the mattress, while still providing support and relieving pressure in all the right places. Some of our panel still found they needed to use a fan to keep cool overnight during the hottest parts of the year, but they could still notice a gentle cooling effect, which hot sleepers will appreciate.

The responsive pocket springs and adaptive micro springs meant all testers found it easy to get comfortable and the firm edge support worked well. Overall, everyone said this mattress helped them get a great night’s sleep.

Note, it is a heavy design, so it was quite tricky to turn (rope someone in to help), but the side handles helped get the job done.

Best luxury mattress for range of firmness

Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool Mattress

Pros

  • Good temperature regulation
  • Everyone said it was comfortable and supportive
  • Easy-to-remove and washable zip cover to keep it clean and fresh for longer

Cons

  • Rotating the mattress is a two-three person job
  • New mattress smell took some time to dissipate
  • One tester had a poor experience with the delivery service

Score: 89/100

Most mattresses in our round-up fall into the medium firm category, but if you want to go softer or firmer, then this Tempur option is worth considering. The memory foam mattress is available in four levels to suit all needs.

Though memory foam traditionally has a bad reputation for temperature regulation, this design boasts SmartCool technology to absorb moisture and prevent you from overheating. Testers said they liked the cool-touch cover, which successfully kept them comfortable and sweat-free while they slept, and the appreciated the washable cover.

Tempur also says its Advanced Material provides its ‘best ever pressure relief’, promising to adapt as you move. We certainly received positive feedback from our panel – although the foam took a few nights to get used to, it felt comfortable and kept sleepers supported in all positions. It scored highly for its whisper-quiet design and the lack of motion transfer, too.

Some thought it looked like a hospital bed and the new mattress smell did linger for a few weeks, but these are minor quibbles.

Best luxury mattress in a box

Simba Hybrid® Luxe Mattress

Pros

  • Premium construction and fillings
  • Cool and comfortable to sleep on
  • Took shape quickly once unboxed

Cons

  • Deep design may not work for everyone
  • Some noticed dips, but they didn’t all linger, so follow care guidance to maintain quality

Score: 88/100

This luxurious mattress in a box from B-corp brand Simba comes highly recommended by our panel. It kept them cool, comfortable and well supported, thanks to 6,000 springs and a breathable layer of bamboo and wool.

Testers found the foam cushioned their bodies nicely and liked the added height this mattress brings (thanks to its 11! different layers). It's a good one to opt for if you want to get in and out of bed easily.

At 31cm, this is one of the deepest mattresses on our list, which has its pros but also means you’ll probably need to invest in new fitted sheets. It’s also worth double checking it will work with your current bed frame. Some testers did notice some dips over time, although not all were permanent.

Dreams Sophie Conran Aura Pocket Wool Mattress

Pros

  • Fast and professional delivery
  • The pillow top makes it feel very premium
  • Has carry handles to help with turning

Cons

  • On the firmer side
  • Heavy

Score: 87/100

One of our panellists said this mattress has “the look and feel of a mattress you’d expect to find in an expensive hotel,” bringing a touch of luxury to your bedroom. And all testers agreed it was supportive and well-made, with no dips forming by the end of the trial period.

Some found it on the firmer side to begin with; however, all panellists said they enjoyed a good sleep after taking a few nights to adjust. The mattress helped them stay comfortable all night long, too.

Like most mattresses, turning it round was tricky due to the weight (although it does have handles to help) and one panellist said the fabric was slippery, which caused the fitted sheet to slide during the night. That aside, everyone rated the mattress highly and were satisfied by the Dreams’ service from start to finish.

Pros

  • High-quality build
  • Effective temperature regulation
  • Reliable delivery service

Cons

  • Deep design may not suit everyone

Score: 87/100

There’s a lot packed into this mattress, including 6,000 pocket springs along with layers of bamboo, Tencel™, organic cotton, flax and wool. These naturally breathable, hypoallergenic materials work together to create a supportive, temperature-regulating sleep surface.

Testers said it offered an excellent balance of comfort and firmness, suiting a variety of sleep styles. The pillowtop adds plush cushioning, while the spring system keeps the body well supported, with many noting reduced aches and pains and even improved sleep quality over time. It ticked the box in terms of breathability and there was minimal motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a fidgety partner.

That said, it’s a hefty mattress and fairly tall, so you may need help moving and rotating it, and deep-fitted sheets are recommended.

Simba Natural Hybrid® Apex Mattress

Pros

  • High-quality build
  • Effective at regulating temperature
  • Good support and comfort

Cons

  • Deep design may not be suitable for everyone

Score: 86/100

The Apex mattress is the jewel in Simba's natural fibre range. The deep, weighty design – which features 6,700 pocket springs and layers of luxurious Cashgora, silk and British wool – is designed to provide plush, tailored support while keeping you cool and comfortable.

Testers found the medium firm mattress was extremely supportive and a pleasure to sleep on, with some commenting that it helped ease aches and pains. It sprang back into shape each morning, with no dipping or sagging reported, and it scored well for temperature regulation and breathability, too. One tester even said it helped with their insomnia.

Just note, it does require deep-fitted sheets, and you’ll probably need a second person to help with regular rotation.

What makes a mattress luxury?

A mattress is usually considered 'luxury' because of the quality of its materials, how it's constructed, and how it feels over time.

Luxury mattresses tend to use higher-grade components such as natural fibres, durable foams and advanced coil systems, designed to deliver superior support, pressure relief and spinal alignment. Many also incorporate clever sleep tech including temperature-regulating fabrics, cooling gel or graphite-infused layers, moisture-wicking covers and zoned support systems that adapt to different areas of the body.

They’re often constructed with more layers and meticulous attention to detail, helping the mattress feel more supportive and comfortable across a range of sleep positions. In most cases, this level of craftsmanship also means greater durability, so the mattress is more likely to maintain its comfort and support for years to come.

What to look for in a luxury mattress

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the best mattress, but there are a few key factors to consider when choosing a luxury model.

  • Firmness level: Choose a firmness that suits your comfort preferences and body weight, as this plays a big role in how supportive the mattress feels. It's best to try out a variety of firmness levels to find what works best for you.
  • Sleep position: Side, back, front and combination sleepers all need different levels of cushioning and support, so it’s important the mattress suits how you sleep most often.
  • Temperature regulation: Hot sleepers should look for designs with cool capabilities. Features such as breathable covers and cooling layers can help regulate heat and keep you comfortable through the night.
  • Motion isolation: If you share a bed, good motion isolation helps reduce disturbances when your bedfellow tosses and turns.
  • Support level: Your mattress should provide consistent support across the whole surface to help keep the spine properly aligned – especially important for people with back pain or stiffness. Look for foam or hybrid styles which offer more consistent, body-contouring support than traditional spring designs.
  • Trial period: Many luxury mattress brands offer extended sleep trials, giving you time to test the mattress at home and decide whether it suits you before fully committing.

Are luxury mattresses worth the investment?

Luxury mattresses can be worth the investment, as they’re typically made with higher-quality materials and offer thoughtful design features that can enhance sleep quality.

That said, a higher price doesn't automatically guarantee better sleep, so it's still important to choose a mattress based on your personal needs including sleep style, body type and support needs.

Ultimately, the right choice comes down to what feels comfortable for you and whether the added features justify the cost.
