best air purifiers

Air purifiers are slowly becoming a must-have gadget for modern living. As we pay more attention to the air quality both inside and outside our homes, the best air purifiers can make a big difference, particularly if you suffer from hay fever or have pets.

They use high-grade filters to trap tiny pollutant particles, such as dust, pet dander (the animal equivalent of dandruff), pollen, smoke and even unwelcome odours. They can be an investment, so our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have tested a wide range of the leading models to find the best for your home and every budget.

Keep scrolling for our full reviews, but here they are in one handy list.

Best air purifiers to buy in 2026

how we test air purifiers

How we test air purifiers

To find the best air purifiers, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute first assess how easy each model is to set up and use, as well as its overall design and efficiency.

We then carry out three tests using a Temptop Air Quality Monitor, which detects fine particulates known as PM2.5 (often created by the combustion of fuel), and coarser, but still inhalable ones known as PM10 (dust and pollen fall into this category).

Specifically, we consider the following key factors.

  • Air quality in a normal room: The first test looks at how quickly each air purifier cleans the everyday air in our test room, replicating how it would operate at home when you don’t have any candles lit, windows open or food cooking. We take readings after 30 minutes and a full hour.
  • Air quality in a polluted room: Our next two tests are carried out in a polluted environment. The first uses deodorant to replicate fine particles such as smoke and urban pollution, and the second uses an equal 5g mixture of dust and ash. We let the pollutants disperse into the air and then run the air purifier for an hour, taking readings at both halfway and full time to see how effective the purifier is at reducing pollution levels.
  • Noise level and energy consumption: To assess noise and energy use, we plug in an energy reader and sound meter. First, we put the purifier on at its maximum speed and place the sound meter exactly one foot away from the air outlet. We leave it to run for an hour and then calculate the energy used, as well as recording the highest sound level from the test. We then repeat the test on the lowest fan speed.
  • Everyday performance: We then send each air purifier out to panellists to use at home for up to two weeks before asking them to report back on how it performed day in, day out. We ask them to tell us how easy it is use and whether they noticed any changes in the air quality during the trial period.

We combine all this feedback and data, as well as considering overall design and how clear and useful the instructions are, to create a final score out of 100. These are the models that impressed the most.

Pros

  • Exceptional purification performance
  • Clear digital display and excellent app
  • Clear instructions that help you get the most out of your air purifier

Cons

  • Turbo mode is loud

Score: 98/100

Levoit’s winning air purifier is a real star performer, combining outstanding purification with a user-friendly design. In the lab, it aced our aerosol test – something many air purifiers struggle with – removing 99.9% of tiny deodorant particles in an hour. It was just as impressive with dust and ash, removing 98.2%, and made light work of everyday air purification, cutting pollutant levels by 87.8% in a normal room after an hour.

Our expert found it made a noticeable difference at home, too. ‘It really helped with my partner’s pet allergy,’ he said. ‘In fact, we both noticed that we were less stuffed up at night while dog-sitting for our son.’ He also praised its quiet night mode, making it a great choice for bedrooms.

The controls are well-designed, and the VeSync app gives you a clear picture of your air quality, while keeping tabs on filter life. The HEPA filter is designed to last up to two years, too. ‘This air purifier was by far the easiest one to set up and use that I’ve tried – the app was a real highlight for me,’ our expert enthused. An excellent all-rounder and deserving winner.

AEG Pure 5000 Compact Air Purifier for Home

Now 28% Off

Pros

  • The night mode automatically dims the LED display and powers down the fan
  • Connects to the AEG Wellbeing app so you can monitor filter usag
  • Tackled odours well

Cons

  • Expensive replacement filters (£69.99)
  • Wasn’t as impressive as other models at reducing pollutants in a normal room environment, working better when challenged with larger quantities of contaminants

Score: 96/100

This compact, slate-grey air purifier boasts lots of innovative features, including a four stage HEPA filter with an anti-bacterium and anti-viral pre-filter, which AEG claims will remove 99.5% of pollutants from the air. There’s also an ‘active carbon layer’ to absorb cooking and damp dog smells, and an odour sensor designed to detect and reduce any hazardous gas or solvents in the air.

This device definitely lived up to its impressive billing – our experts liked the chic design, clear display, responsive controls and easy-to-follow instructions. When it came to performance, they rated it ‘exceptionally good’ at filtering fine particles as well as dust and ash, reducing the pollutants by over 99%. It was also quiet, even on its highest setting. Our panel liked being able to see a graph of the machine’s progress and praised the ‘stealthy’ night mode.

The filters aren’t the cheapest and it doesn’t have castor wheels for moving around, but due to its compact design, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Pros

  • Outstanding air purification performance on test
  • Modern look shouldn't stand out too much around the home
  • Intuitive and informative accompanying app

Cons

  • Heavy

Score: 96/100

This sleek air purifier achieved full marks across all three of our air quality tests – it reduced fine particles by 98.9% and removed 92% of dust and ash. It’s got some impressive features too, making it a premium buy with a price tag to match.

Testers liked how intuitive it was to set up and use, whether they controlled it via the app (where you can access detailed information about your air quality) or by voice. There are six settings, plus an auto one that will detect changes in air quality and adjust its power accordingly. At its max, it’s not the quietest, but it was barely noticeable on its lowest setting, recording 39dB in the lab, which is similar to the ambient noise of a library. So, it’s a good one for bedrooms too.

Finally, a note on its filters because you won't see a reference to HEPA in the specs below. That’s because Molekule has created its own unique ones, which it claims not only collect particles but destroy them too (including mould). This has been tested and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the US for added peace of mind.

Pros

  • Compact yet powerful
  • Good length cord and handle making it easy to move from room to room
  • Excellent performance during our test cleaning everyday air, especially for its size

Cons

  • Slight lag when selecting power levels (in comparison to its more advanced version)

Score: 94/100

A compact version of the model above, this an elegant and very effective purifier. Despite its smaller stature, it cleared dust, ash and aerosol pollutants with ease, removing 97% in half an hour and 99.7% in a full hour.

Set-up was easy, thanks to the clear instructions (which was helpful, as the on-purifier controls took a bit of deciphering), and it has the same intuitive features as its larger counterpart. The strong handle makes it pleasingly portable, and the filters are easy to fit and remove.

It’s an investment, though, and, when on maximum power, testers recorded highs of 70 decibels. But with five settings to choose from, you should be fine to run it at night without disturbing your sleep.

Pros

  • Sturdy and stable
  • Range of fan speeds
  • Intuitive controls and seamless in-app connectivity

Cons

  • Run time can only be controlled via the app

Score: 94/100

Looking for an air purifier that’s compact, efficient and smartly designed for smaller living spaces? This Blueair model ticks all the boxes – and then some.

Despite its smaller footprint, it proved itself a powerful performer. Aerosol particles were reduced by 99.8% in an hour, while it removed 93.6% of dust and ash in the lab. Its compact design makes it easy to tuck into corners or behind furniture, without compromising airflow or accessibility. The interface is clear and well-thought-out, with three fan speeds and two distinct modes (standard or night), which are all easy to navigate using the device’s responsive controls.

The seamless app connectivity also sets this model apart. The Blueair app pairs easily via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; and, once connected, you can control fan speeds and modes and schedule the device to turn on or off at specific times. Sleek and reliable, this purifier punches well above its price tag.

Pros

  • Detailed instructions means set-up is a doddle and done in a couple of minutes
  • Easy to switch between fan speeds and modes
  • Sturdy but also fairly portable

Cons

  • The cable isn’t that long, which could make it tricky to find the right spot

Score: 93/100

With its pared-back style, straightforward set-up and intuitive app, this air purifier should fit right into any home. Testers liked the detailed manual, the range of three fan speeds and the quiet night mode. It’s also lightweight, which means moving it around isn’t too much of a struggle, despite the lack of handles.

When it came to performance, it quickly started cleaning the air in our lab, putting in the best performance in our ‘normal environment’ test by reducing contaminants by over 96.8%. It was effective against fine and large particles too – all decreased by over 99.6% within an hour of testing. Our at-home tester backed up our findings, saying that it made a noticeable difference to their air quality, even improving the quality of their sleep.

We’ve tested this whole range from Blueair. At a glance, here are their scores and what sets them apart:

  • Blueair 3250a: Scored 92/100 and designed for rooms of 48 m²; lacks app compatibility

Pros

  • Quick at cleaning air on test (just our intensive deodorant test took a while)
  • User-friendly

Cons

  • While small, it’s not the most portable design
  • Touch screen sometimes slow to respond

Score: 93/100

This air purifier has built-in anti-odour technology, which releases a fresh floral and citrus scent, so your air is both cleaner and sweeter smelling. Testers found it worked well and liked the effect. In terms of air quality, it put in one of the best performances against dust and ash, removing up to 99.77% from our test room. Dealing with deodorant particles was slightly tricker, but it still reduced levels by 98.67% so we’re nit-picking here.

Our experts praised its clear control panel and sizeable air quality display. They found it easy to set up too, and thought the instructions were helpful (there’s a start-up guide in the box with the rest accessible online). But it’s not the most portable, as there’s no handle or obvious area to grip onto, and the noise level (60dB) was distracting when on max speed.

There’s a good selection of modes, timers and air speeds, though, so you can tailor it to your home. And the filters are designed so that you only need to change them up to every five years. They were simple to fit and remove for cleaning, too.

We've also tested the mini version of this air purifier (score: 87/100), which is designed for spaces of up to 23 square metres. Or for extra-large areas of up to 130 square metres, there’s also a MAX version.

Pros

  • Excellent at removing fine particles from the air
  • Useful app with scheduling and air-quality monitoring
  • Self-cleaning pre-filter

Cons

  • Self-cleaning feature isn't automatic

Score: 91/100

If you have four-legged friends, consider this pet-focused Levoit model. It combines HEPA and activated carbon filtration with features designed to tackle everything from fine airborne fur to those less-than-lovely litter tray and wet dog smells. It impressed us in the lab, removing 99.7% of deodorant particles and more than 92% of dust and ash from our test room in one hour.

One standout feature is the self-cleaning pre-filter, which, after manual activation, collects pet hair and transfers it into an easy-to-empty tray – no more clogging. The filter is simple to remove and replace, while indents on either side make the unit easy to carry despite its weight.

The controls are intuitive, and the handy VeSync app lets you monitor air quality, adjust settings and create schedules. While the boxy design won’t be to everyone’s taste, its strong purification and pet-friendly features make it a great pick for pet parents.

Pros

Cons

  • Speaker quality isn’t great
  • Best for smaller rooms

Score: 91/100

Another Blueair model, but this one brings something different to the table: it doubles up as a sunrise alarm clock. You can programme it to slowly light up 15 to 30 minutes before the alarm finally goes off, waking you up with one of 11 calming sounds, from bird song to light rain.

As a purifier, our tester found it made a noticeable difference to the air quality of the room. It quickly filtered out dust particles, removing almost 96% within an hour, and while it effectively minimised aerosol contaminants by 98.6%, the smell still lingered.

You’ll need the app to set the clock timer, but it’s simple and straightforward to use, plus the app reminds you when it’s time to replace your filter – a great add-on. While it’s best suited to small rooms, we found it had no issues purifying a standard double bedroom. Plus, it was super quiet on the lowest setting, meaning it won’t disturb your sleep.

Pros

  • Filter only needs changing every six years
  • Relatively compact size compared to 70m² room coverage

Cons

  • Motion detection claim wasn’t met in testing

Score: 91/100

The filter on this air purifier only needs changing once every six years, making it an excellent set-and-forget option for those who don’t want to bother with lots of maintenance. It's easy to assemble, too – just remove the filter from the packaging and you’re ready to go.

It scored full marks for clearing large particles (ash and dust), removing 97.9% in one hour, and also impressed in our deodorant test, removing 99.94% of particles in an hour. Our testers also loved the clear, bright display. ‘I appreciate that it shows air quality as an easy-to-understand percentage, rather than only PM2.5 values,’ one said.

It’s quiet, too. We recorded 44 decibels on the lowest setting (background noise was 39 decibels), which is equivalent to the sound level of a quiet library, so it shouldn’t keep you up at night. In fact, one tester said: ‘I actually felt it improved my sleep quality, as I felt less congested when it was running in my bedroom.’ A great buy that comes in a range of chic colours.

Pros

  • Strong all-round performance
  • Very quiet
  • Filter is easy to remove and clean with provided brush

Cons

  • Interface can be somewhat confusing
  • Cat design may not be for everyone

Score: 88/100

This pet-focused air purifier has a range of features designed to deal with fur, such as dual-sided air intake and an easy-access filter that comes with a brush to clean it out. It even has a pet lock to mitigate wandering paws.

It scored close to full marks on purification, removing 98.8% of ash and dust and 99.8% of deodorant after an hour – ‘It put in an excellent performance,’ our expert said. It doesn’t have a night mode, but at just 38 decibels on low speed (equivalent to soft ambient room noise), we don’t think it’s a feature you’ll miss. As one tester put it, ‘It’s so quiet that I forgot it was on!’

Our testers had a few issues with the interface, often needing to refer to the manual to figure out certain functions and symbols, while the ‘split’ screen was a little hard to read. But once you get used to it, this is an impressive performer at a good price.

Pros

  • Controls are well-placed and simple to use
  • Design is great for small spaces

Cons

  • Short power cord may make placement tricky
  • No handles to help with portability (and while it’s small, it may be too big for some shelves, so check measurements before you buy)

Score: 86/100

There’s something spa-like about this minimalist air purifier from Russell Hobbs, making it our top pick for soothing you to sleep. It’s quiet, and while it’s busily cleaning the air around it, it can also disperse essential oils via a hidden aroma pad. Testers found this feature was fiddly to access at times, but once they added a few drops, the scent would linger for a long time.

Back to its main job, it was easy to set up and removed nearly 95% of dust and ash from the room. Deodorant proved trickier, with it taking out 83.14% of fine particles within an hour – that said, our expert still said the room felt notably fresher.

While lightweight and relatively compact, it proved sturdy too, and this was the most energy efficient in testing, using just 0.001kWh in an hour on its highest setting (less than a tenth of a penny). Time to plug it in, add a few drops of lavender oil, and drift off.

Pros

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Excellent air purification performance
  • Very low energy usage

Cons

  • Only two speed settings
  • Setting up the app and voice commands is somewhat tricky

Score: 86/100

This affordable air purifier punches well above its price point when it comes to performance. In our lab tests, it managed to remove over 99% of deodorant particles and 95% of dust and ash from our test room in just 30 minutes. After an hour, the air was practically devoid of pollutants – and much cleaner than the starting baseline!

Panellists noticed a difference in their homes, too. ‘This definitely improved the air quality,’ said one tester, while others noted how easy the device was to set up. The app is easy to use, too, and you can even connect it to your smart speaker to use via voice control.

The onboard controls are a little basic – there are just two speeds, and it’s slightly annoying to have to cycle through all the settings to change from low to high mode. The lightweight, compact design is easy to move around though, and the aromatherapy drawer (where you can drop essential oils to diffuse the scent) is a nice feature. A fantastic value pick overall.

Pros

  • Very easy to set up and use
  • Great value

Cons

  • Not as effective as other budget models

This model has to be one of the simplest designs we’ve ever tested. It scored full marks for ease of use, thanks to the straightforward one-button controls, clear indicator lights, and excellent instructions. Set-up and filter changes are easy, too.

In our lab, its air purification performance was solid, especially when filtering out fine deodorant particles, reducing levels by over 99% within 30 minutes. With larger dust and ash particles, performance wasn’t quite as strong as other budget models we’ve tested – but the air quality was still significantly improved.

You won’t get smart features like an app, timer, or voice control with this model, although our testers loved having the option to add scented essential oils in the top. But if simplicity is what you’re after, this is a straightforward, set-and-forget air purifier that’s great for using in the bedroom.

Cons

  • Noise level is distracting on its highest setting
  • Lacks a remote control for added convenience

Score: 81/100

This great value air purifier is pretty much ready to use straight out of the box – just insert the filter and switch it on using the simple control panel. There are three speeds to cycle through as well as a sleep mode and timer for added convenience.

In the lab, it worked best when tackling fine particles, removing up to 97% the aerosol we sprayed within an hour. The activated carbon filter worked effectively too, with our panellist noting the purifier removed odours quickly and made the room feel fresher.

When faced with dust and ash, the air purifier returned the air to a reasonable quality within half an hour but struggled to remove more than 78%, so if dust is a concern, this might not be the model for you. That said, pollutant levels were brought down below the levels for a standard room environment, and the price tag offers good value for money.

Why you should trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

The Good Housekeeping Institute has been testing the latest home appliances for more than 100 years, so when we noted the rise of air purifiers, we knew we had to review them in the lab and share our verdict with you. We’ve tested 21 air purifiers over the last two years across the still-growing market, so we know what we’re looking for and have developed rigorous protocols to measure each machine against.

Blossom Boothroyd, our homes testing manager, was responsible for developing those protocols, to ensure they assess model in a way that replicates how you would use it at home. Megan Geall, our senior homes and lifestyle writer, has written hundreds of home appliance reviews, and spent a lot of time researching and understanding how air purifiers work and what separates a great one from a disappointing buy.

best air purifiers

Which is the best air purifier for home use?

The best air purifier we’ve tested is the AEG Pure 5000 Compact Air Purifier for Home, which is designed for home use in rooms up to 41m² (just over 8 x 5 metres). It’s incredibly effective at removing contaminants from the air and very quiet, too.

How to choose an air purifier

A good air purifier should improve the air quality in your home as quickly and quietly as possible. Here are the different considerations to make when shopping.

  • Filters: If you suffer from airborne allergies, a HEPA filter is a safe bet for removing even the tiniest particles from the air. If you also want to reduce odours in your home, such as cooking smells, look for an additional carbon filter.
  • Noise: If you’re going to use your air purifier in your bedroom at night, look for a quiet model, especially if you’re a light sleeper.
  • Portability: You’ll need to decide where your device is going to live and whether you’re going to want to move it frequently. If so, you may want to opt for a compact model like the Blueair Mini Restful or GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier Lite.
  • Size and reach: Check the size of the room you want to purify. This matters hugely, as you need to ensure the machine you buy can tackle the entire space. Some can purify rooms as large as 135m², while others only stretch to areas measuring 10m².
  • Wattage: Generally, the higher the wattage, the more energy-intensive a product will be. The amount of energy a purifier consumes equates to how much it will cost to run per hour.

How do air purifiers work?

These clever gadgets use several different filters to clean the air thoroughly, with most air purifiers claiming to remove over 99% of nasties from the air. Here’s a quick breakdown.

  • Pre-filter: The first filter is usually a larger one that can be rinsed, dried and reused, and is not too dissimilar from those you find in cordless vacuums. This deals with larger particles such as dust and hair.
  • Fine filter (usually HEPA): The second filter captures smaller particles and can’t be washed, which means it’s disposable. On the positive side, depending on how much you use your machine, it should last a good six months. Some are known as high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA), which can catch microscopic dust particles as small as 0.3 microns.
  • Carbon filter: Some models also contain activated carbon filters. These can help remove volatile organic compounds, such as those from perfumes, cigarette smoke and cooking.

Do air purifiers remove smells?

Yes, many air purifiers can help reduce household odours – but their effectiveness will depend on the type of filter they contain. Activated carbon filters are the best type for absorbing smells from cooking, pets, smoke, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – chemicals emitted by things such as paints and cleaning agents. HEPA filters capture particles like dust, pollen and pet dander, but won’t be much help with smells.

Bear in mind that while air purifiers can filter odours from the air, they can’t fully remove smells that have permeated carpets and soft furnishings.

What are signs you need an air purifier?

If you suffer from hay fever or allergies indoors, notice lingering cooking or pet smells, or wake up feeling congested, an air purifier could help improve your indoor air quality. They’re also worth considering if you live near a busy road, have pets, or spend long periods with the windows closed.

‘Air purifiers can reduce the amount of airborne particles circulating indoors,’ says Abbas Kanani, Superintendent pharmacist at Chemist Click. ‘For people with allergies, a purifier using an effective HEPA filter may help reduce exposure to particles such as pollen, dust and pet dander, although it will not remove every trigger and should sit alongside measures such as regular cleaning and addressing damp or mould.’

What air purifier do doctors recommend?

Dr Scott Pereira, consultant immunologist at Medical Express Clinic, recommends looking at filter types instead of specific brands for tackling airborne allergens. ‘Air purifiers should have a HEPA filter for airborne pollens, mould spores and pet dander indoors,’ he says.

‘Allergic patients commonly have nasal hyperreactivity, which means they may also react to non-allergens, such as perfumes, cigarette smoke and diesel exhaust,’ Dr Pereira adds. ‘These volatile organic chemicals can be removed by air purifiers that have activated carbon filters.’

He also points out that air purifiers aren’t the only way to reduce allergen exposure, emphasising that keeping pets out of the bed and reducing soft furnishings in the bedroom (e.g. by choosing hard floor instead of carpet and blinds instead of curtains) can be more effective steps to take.

Where should you place an air purifier?

The best place to put your air purifier is in the room you use the most. After all, there’s no point putting in upstairs if you spend the majority of your time downstairs.

Most households will probably find it best to place an air purifier in the living room throughout the day and in the bedroom at night (especially if you struggle with allergies).

Wherever you place it within the room, ensure there’s clearance on all sides with nothing blocking the in- or outlets. Good air flow allows for the best performance.

How much electricity does an air purifier use?

In general, air purifiers don’t use a lot of electricity. The model that consumed the least was the Tefal Pure Air Mini, which didn’t even register on our meter on its lowest setting, followed by the Russell Hobbs Clean Air Mini Aroma and GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier Lite (0.001kWh), which cost less than a tenth of a penny over an hour.

How often should you replace the filter in an air purifier?

Every air purifier will come with its own set of instructions that will specify when the filter needs replacing. Some also have an indicator light that lets you know when the job needs doing.

How often this happens will vary but it can be anything from every three to six months to every few years. Just make sure to follow the guidance to keep your air purifier working the way it’s supposed to.

The verdict: What is the best air purifier to buy?

The Levoit Eleva 300X Smart Air Purifier takes our top spot thanks to its outstanding all-round performance. It excelled in every one of our lab tests, is easy to use and has one of the best companion apps we've tried. It's best for small to medium rooms, so if you're purifying a particularly large home, the Molekule Air Pro Air Purifier could be worth the investment.

If you're on a budget, the Russell Hobbs Clean Air Mini Aroma is a fantastic buy under £50. It’s effective but it is a more compact device, so it's best suited to smaller rooms. For just £10 more, the GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier Lite offers improved performance and a little more coverage.
