best pillows for neck pain
Good Housekeeing UK

Whether you’re navigating an injury, experiencing stiffness after spending the day hunched over a laptop, or regularly spend hours tackling niggles with your massage gun there’s one thing we can all agree on: neck pain is, well, a pain in the neck. And sleeping on a bad pillow or mattress can lead to days of discomfort.

The best pillows for neck pain are typically firmer designs or ones that come with an adjustable filling that can be customised to suit your sleeping position and personal preferences. They should help to keep your body naturally aligned, so you wake up feeling rested.

To help you sleep easy, we recruited our panel to help us test all the leading designs at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Check out our recommendations below, along with expert advice from Philippa Oakley, chiropractor and member of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA).

How we test pillows for neck pain

best pillows for neck pain
Megan Geall/Good Housekeeping

Finding the best pillows requires a lot of very important snoozing. To get accurate, real-world results, we asked a panel of testers to trial a range pillows at home over a two-week period.

They rated each one on comfort, support, breathability, washability and overall design, and told us whether they'd continue to use it after the trial or not.

Back at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our experts conducted wash tests and checked for any damage to the pillow's filling or performance.

To find the best pillows for neck pain, we then combined the panel’s feedback, the results of our in-house tests and the advice of experts, to bring you recommendations you can rely on, night after night.

Snuggledown Sumptuous Hungarian Goose Down Soft Support Front Sleeper Pillow

Pros

  • Breathable
  • All panellists agreed that the pillow helped them get a good night’s sleep

Cons

  • May have a slight smell initially due to the down filling

Score: 95/100

This is a top pick for front sleepers. Panellists appreciated its thin padding, which meant it slipped easily under their chests and added comfort below their neck without extending and lifting it.

The combination of down and feather added a touch of luxury too, and testers were impressed with how well it maintained its shape and quality after washing. Drying took a little longer than expected but it was hard to fault for comfort.

Pros

  • The cover retained its shape after washing
  • Luxurious feel

Cons

  • You can't adjust the padding

Score: 94/100

Latex foam is an unusual filling for a pillow but one that shouldn’t be overlooked – especially if you’re looking for a good level of support. There’s no plasticky smell and our panellists loved its bouncy, mouldable sleep surface.

While not specifically adjustable, it does boast a thick quilted cover that can be removed if you prefer a slightly thinner design. Plus, every single panellist said it regulated their temperature well and told us they would continue to use the pillow after the trial.

Simba Hybrid Firm Pillow

Pros

  • One tester’s sleep tracker reported more deep sleep throughout the trial period
  • Simba is a registered B Corp

Cons

  • Expensive

Score: 93/100

A firm pillow often provides better support, and this one was a hit with our panellists, particularly for those who slept on their side.

There’s an inner layer of foam-enclosed springs and two softer cotton layers, which create an effect that’s both supportive and yielding. You can also switch up or remove the layers to achieve the perfect combination for your sleep style.

Opting for all the layers made it trickier to fit inside a standard pillowcase, so you may need to invest in some new bedding, but that aside, this handy design is a winner in our eyes.

Two removable inner sections mean you can customise this pillow to your sleep preferences. One layer is filled with shredded memory foam that adapts to your sleeping position, which our testers described as soft yet supportive; the other layer is filled with microfibre to create a soft but supportive surface.

The pillow suited a range of sleepers, including those with neck or back pain, with several reporting improved comfort and noting the adjustability as the key factor.

Like many of our top-rated designs, it is slightly more expensive than your average pillow, which put some testers off slightly at first. But after extended use, most agreed it was worth the investment.

Pros

  • Breathable as air can pass easily under the neck
  • Care advice was detailed and easy to follow

Cons

  • Less aesthetically-pleasing than traditional pillows

Score: 87/100

Designed specifically to alleviate neck pain, the Original Groove Pillow features a unique ergonomic dip that’s perfect for back sleepers. If that’s you, the groove should keep your spine in a neutral position and cradle your neck, while side sleepers are treated to additional support on the edges of the pillow.

Our panel praised the mouldable foam design for its comfort and pain-relieving abilities, but some found the unique shape and firmness took a bit of getting used to.

Cons

Memory foam isn’t for everyone and that’s why our testers loved this natural fibre pillow from Woolroom. It contains Allergy UK-approved British wool, which can be removed or added to create the height needed for your head and neck.

Wool can be noisier to sleep on but it’s good at naturally regulating body temperature and our panel said the filling remained light and fluffy, even after washing. The pillow also comes with a 30-night trial offering, so you can decide if it's right for you.

Deluxe Pocket Sprung Pillow

REM-Fit Deluxe Pocket Sprung Pillow

Pros

  • Includes washable outer cover
  • Maintains its shape overnight

Cons

  • May take up significant space in the washing machine

Score: 86/100

Our testers rated this pillow highly, with one describing it as “truly the most comfortable pillow I’ve ever used.” It features 60 individually wrapped pocket springs, which provide structured support for the neck and shoulders. Panel members described it as firm with a little ‘give’, with several telling us it was comfortable and didn’t aggravate existing aches. That said, some front sleepers found it a little too high, so it may be better suited to side and back sleepers.

It also scored nearly full marks for breathability, thanks to the layer of light, ventilated white fibres that surround the springs, making it a good choice if you run hot at night.

Simba Hybrid® Memory Foam Pillow

Pros

  • No dips formed after sleeping on it
  • Comes with a handy storage bag for any removed foam

Cons

  • Gave off a funny smell at first (but this did dissipate)

Score: 86/100

No matter what type of sleeper you are, our panel found this adjustable memory foam pillow comfortable and plump, providing a good amount of support without flattening overnight.

The filling is made of microfibre and Simba’s Nanocube technology – otherwise known as a zipped inner bag of tiny foam cubes that optimise airflow and can be removed to customise the height and firmness of the pillow. Just note, it wasn’t the most breathable on test.

Pros

  • Plush, quilted cover
  • Quiet in use

Cons

  • Took some testers a while to find the right level of support

Score: 80/100

Another adjustable option, the customisable filling makes this pillow suitable for different types of sleepers. Simply unzip the side to access the removable memory foam clusters, which can be tweaked to suit your preferred level of support. The pillow also comes with a small storage bag for any excess filling.

“Comfort lasted through the night, and the pillow kept its shape through to the morning,” said one satisfied tester. Just note, it’s quite soft and bouncy, so may not suit those who prefer a firmer design.

Our other niggle was the lack of clear washing and care instructions, although these are available online (the removable quilted cover is machine washable at 40°C).

Fogarty Cool Sleep Side Sleeper Body Pillow

Dunelm Fogarty Cool Sleep Side Sleeper Body Pillow

Pros

  • Useful for side sleepers
  • Breathable design

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a protective cover

Score: 78/100

If you’re a side sleeper who tends to run hot, this could be the perfect pillow for you. The long, body pillow combines a temperature regulating fibre filling with a breathable 100% cotton cover. And testers noticed the cooling effect, both initially and throughout the night, describing it as consistently fresh – although it was slightly less noticeable when used with a pillowcase.

The elongated shape provides full-body support, helping to keep your spine in a more neutral position and reducing pressure around the neck and shoulders.

Sure enough, our testers found it helpful for maintaining a comfortable sleeping position, especially when placed along the body. One even used it as a backrest for reading in bed.

Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow

The Groove Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow

Pros

  • Filling stays in place overnight
  • Good for back and side sleepers

Cons

  • Some heat retention noted

Score: 70/100

Designed with neck support in mind, the Original Groove Pillow features a distinctive ergonomic dip that’s well suited to back sleepers. This central groove helps encourage a more neutral sleeping position while cradling the neck. Side sleepers are also catered for, with raised edges designed to provide additional support and help maintain a comfortable position overnight.

Our panel praised the mouldable foam design for its comfort and pressure-relieving qualities, with some noting reduced stiffness over time. The foam adapts to the shape of the head and neck, offering a supportive yet cushioned feel.

That said, some found the unique design and firmer profile took a little getting used to. Another gripe for some was its larger-than-average size, which may not fit standard pillowcases – something to consider before you buy.

Homescapes Orthopaedic V Shaped Pillow Duck Feather and Down

Pros

  • Soft duck feather and down filling
  • High-quality cotton cover

Cons

  • May lack firmness for some

Score: 70/00

This V-shaped pillow is quite different to traditional designs. According to the brand, it’s designed for orthopaedic use, nursing support or simply propping yourself up in bed.

Many of our testers appreciated the added support around the neck and shoulders, as well as how easily it could be moulded into different positions for personalised comfort.

While it performed well as a backrest for sitting up in bed, some testers felt it could benefit from a firmer filling for overnight use, particularly when used as a primary sleeping pillow. Its large size also divided opinion – the generous surface area offers enhanced support and versatility, but some found it bulky to store when not in use. You need to purchase a pillowcase separately.

How to choose the best pillow for neck pain

When choosing the best pillow for neck pain, you need to consider preferred sleep position, the level of firmness and support you like. The aim is to keep your neck in a neutral position (aligned with your spine) throughout the night. If you find yourself constantly adjusting, folding or bunching up your pillow to get comfortable, it’s probably not providing the support you need.

Note, this is general advice only – if you have persistent or severe neck pain, we recommend consulting a GP or healthcare professional.

Here are the key factors to consider before you buy.

Body type

The right pillow will depend on your build, especially the width of your shoulders. The pillow should support your head, so it stays in line with your spine, rather than tilting up or dropping down. If you have a broader frame, you’ll likely need a deeper pillow that offers proper support around your neck, while someone with a smaller frame will suit something lower. If you’re unsure, an adjustable pillow is a good option, as it allows you to customise the height until you find the best level of support.

Sleep position

Your preferred sleeping position plays a key role in the type of support you need to keep your spine in a neutral alignment.

If you sleep on your back, Philippa Oakley, chiropractor and member of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), explains that the best pillow is one that only offers “a small amount of support to the head and neck”, as the spine is already in a neutral position. “The pillow shouldn’t be too thick, or it will push your neck forwards,” she says.

For side sleepers, it’s a different story. According to Oakley, the best pillow is one that “supports the space between your neck and shoulders and doesn’t tip the head up or down.” A good way to check you’ve got the right height is to make sure your head is parallel to the mattress.

Finally, for front sleepers, Oakley has a surprising recommendation. “Typically, front sleepers are advised to sleep without a pillow,” she says. “However, most adults will find that using a pillow is necessary to prevent neck or upper back pain.” In this case, she suggests placing a pillow under the chest to reduce the amount of extension through the neck.

Firmness level

Firmness is key when it comes to proper support. If your pillow is too soft and floppy, it won’t hold your neck in place, but if it’s too firm, it can feel uncomfortable. As a general guide, look for a design that keeps its shape and supports your neck, without needing constant readjustment. If your current pillow feels too flat or collapses during the night, it’s probably time to replace it. We’ve clearly flagged the firmness level for each pillow featured in our list (head to the key specs) to make choosing easier.

What is the best pillow for neck pain?

Adjustable and orthopaedic pillows are often recommended for neck pain because they offer tailored support. Here’s what you need to know about each.

Adjustable pillows

“Adjustable pillows are recommended by chiropractors as you can alter them to suit your needs, body type and sleeping style,” explains Oakley.

These pillows typically feature removable layers or removable inner fillings, allowing you to customise the height and support to suit your needs. It may take a few nights of trial and error to find the right balance, but once you do, it can make a noticeable difference to your comfort and sleep quality. Some designs, like the Fine Bedding Adjustable Honeyfoam Pillow also come with a handy bag to store the excess filling.

Orthopaedic pillows

Oakley also recommends checking out orthopaedic designs. These typically feature contoured or raised sections that support the natural curve of the neck and encourage better alignment while you sleep – which can be particularly helpful if often wake up with stiffness. The Original Groove Pillow was a hit with testers for this exact reason.

The verdict on the best pillows for neck pain

best handheld fans

If you’re a front sleeper, we recommend our top-rated Snuggledown Sumptuous Hungarian Goose Down Pillow, which scored an impressive 95/100. Its slim design makes it particularly comfortable for front sleeping.

More of a side sleeper? Then the Simba CustomFlex Pillow is a great adjustable option, allowing you to tailor the level of support to suit your needs.

For those on a budget, our lowest priced pillow is the Groove Easy Sleeper Pillow, which scored an impressive 87/100, and proved to be the perfect pick for back sleepers.
