More than 25 years after Gilmore Girls first premiered, HBO Max has announced that an official documentary about the beloved series is in the works. The streaming service shared the news on Instagram with a caption that feels perfectly on brand for Lorelai Gilmore: "I'm gonna need some more coffee."
“We will NEVER be done with Gilmore Girls. This is THE greatest news everrrr! Copperboom 💥,” one fan commented.
“Lorelai and Rory forever. 🥰☕️ This photo instantly took me back, and now we’re getting a documentary?! I’m so excited! ♥️✨,” commented another.
What will the ‘Gilmore Girls’ documentary be about?
The currently untitled documentary will be the first authorized film about Gilmore Girls and promises to take fans behind the scenes of the iconic series that aired from 2000 to 2007.
Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, executive producer Daniel Palladino, and star Lauren Graham are all confirmed to appear, alongside additional cast and crew members. Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Bonni Cohen (Athlete A, An Inconvenient Sequel) is directing the project, which is being produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and R.J. Cutler's This Machine banner, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Longtime fans can also expect plenty of exclusive material. The documentary will feature never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, and original script pages, offering an inside look at the making of one of television's most enduring comfort shows.
The announcement comes as Gilmore Girls continues to enjoy remarkable longevity. Although the original series ended in 2007, it found an entirely new generation of fans through streaming and inspired Netflix's 2016 revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The original series recently departed Netflix in the U.S. and is now available to stream on Hulu and Prime Video, while the revival remains on Netflix.
When can I watch the documentary?
For now, HBO Max has not announced a release date for the documentary, only teasing that it's "coming soon." Judging by fans' excitement over the announcement, however, viewers are more than ready for another trip back to Stars Hollow.
The documentary isn't the only new Gilmore Girls project on the horizon. Amy and Daniel are also collaborating on an upcoming book about the making of the series, which is expected to be released in fall 2027.
