My friends regularly joke that I’m a grandma because I love everything vintage — from my clothes and home decor to hobbies such as weaving and bead embroidery. And who doesn't love a good charity shop find? I even used to teach the history of fashion, so I know a thing or two about ‘granny blouses’, and they’re not your typical grandma’s shirt...but almost.

Think of a top your grandma might wear, but with a modern twist. The right details can take a it from dated to stylish. Think colourful, printed peasant shirts, bow-collar blouses with lots of volume in the sleeves, and dainty tops with Peter Pan collars and lacy details.

Pair them with the right pieces and they’ll feel anything but old-fashioned. Here are some of my favourite ways to wear the trend:

Wear a delicate collared blouse with baggy denim

Your grandma might don this blouse, but she probably wouldn’t pair it with baggy jeans. The juxtaposition of a delicate top with a Peter Pan collar and lace details against wide-leg jeans or a denim skirt feels surprisingly chic.

Pair a peasant blouse with a voluminous skirt

You might be tempted to choose a structured trouser when you’re wearing a flowy blouse covered in a print, but I recommend leaning into the bold nature of the look. Instead, try a voluminous skirt with lots of gathering or one with floaty layers.

Try a dramatic blouse and sporty joggers

While my nan might shame me for wearing this to visit her, I’d do it anyway. Hear me out: it's all about contrast. The relaxed feel of a jogger works surprisingly well when contrasted against a polished blouse. Try tucking it into the waistband to up the sophistication.
