We’re manifesting warmer weather for the Easter weekend, and nothing says sunshine quite like a chilled glass of rosé. The bottle in question? Viral favourite La Vieille Ferme – better known as “chicken wine”. Fresh, juicy, crisp and dry, it’s easy to see why this easy-drinker became a social media staple. The fact you can pick up a bottle for under a tenner certainly helps, too.
Hailing from the Rhône Valley (not Provence), the instantly recognisable label – complete with a pair of chickens – has become something of a cult classic. In the glass, expect red berries, a hint of citrus and a delicate floral note. In other words, a reliable crowd-pleaser. It also scored a solid 82/100 from the Good Housekeeping Institute.
It’s made for long, lazy lunches or easy dinners with friends. Serve it as an aperitif, or alongside grilled seafood, salads or a classic picky tea. Put simply, it’s summer in a glass.
And while rosé isn’t strictly seasonal anymore, there’s still something unbeatable about that first proper glass, sunnies on, head tilted towards the sun.
So, to ensure your wine rack is replenished and ready to go, we’ve price-checked all the major retailers to find the best deals right now. Including, how to get a bottle for as little as £5.25 (down from around £9).
Our search focused on the standard 75cl bottle of La Vieille Ferme rosé – no magnums, no boxes, no dupes. We checked prices at Asda, Co-op, Iceland, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Majestic (Aldi, Lidl and M&S aren’t included, as they don’t currently stock it).
Right now, Asda is the cheapest – but there’s a catch. You’ll need to buy six bottles to unlock the full saving. Combined with its current Rollback price, that brings the cost down to £5.25 per bottle, with the offer running until 12 April.
Elsewhere, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are running similar “buy six, save 25%” promotions, bringing the price down to £5.44 per bottle. If you’re only after one, Asda still comes out on top at £7 – the lowest single-bottle price currently available.
