Every household has an old biscuit tin that’s lived on long after the last treat was gone. In our family, it holds sewing bits and mystery buttons. And we can tell M&S’s adorable new Santa Jack-in-a-Box Musical Tin is destined for a second life, too.

Wind it up and Santa himself pops out of the musical tin. Yes, the first surprise scared me half to death. But once recovered, it’s hard not to laugh – and to wind it up again for whoever hasn’t seen it yet. The kids must have done it a million times already, ensuring there’s no chance we’ll be binning it once we’ve scoffed the biscuits.

M&S has been on a roll with its Christmas biccies lately. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen the retailer bring back the retro Big Six biscuit box, a nod to its 1950s heritage, and launch a Magical Projector tin filled with star-shaped shortbread. Proof that a good biscuit tin is just as important as what’s inside. But this one might be the most fun yet.

The 250g tin is filled with buttery mini star-shaped shortbread generously studded with decadent dark chocolate chips. Yum! We’re hoping M&S brings out a refill pack soon, because these are unlikely to last the week, let alone make it to Christmas.

At £12, it’s not the sort of tin you buy just for the biscuits. As with the Big Six and the projector tin, you’re paying for the keepsake as well as the contents. One customer called it ‘beautiful’ and said it was ‘well worth the price even without the cookies inside’. We concur.

This is one biscuit tin destined for a second job – and we already can’t wait to dig it out again next Christmas.
