There aren’t many performances that come close to Jodie Comer’s mesmerising turn as Villanelle in Killing Eve, but there is one that gives it a run for its money. Introducing The End We Start From, the intimate, thoughtful and deeply haunting drama that stars Jodie as a new mother fighting for survival in a flooded city. If you ask us, the 2024 film is her best role since Killing Eve - and it’s available to watch tonight on the BBC.

Not only does Jodie give an incredible performance in the lead role, she also served as executive producer on the film alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, and others. The result is terrifyingly realistic portrayal of a world in the clutches of an environmental crisis - and a mother who must navigate the disaster and find a way forward for her family.

Based on Megan Hunter’s 2017 debut novel, the story revolves around new mother (she remains unnamed throughout) played by Jodie Comer, who fights for survival as London is submerged by flood waters. The world is being destroyed by an environmental crisis, with the flood hitting just as the woman’s water breaks.

While her baby, Zeb, arrives safely, the mother and her partner R (Joel Fry) must find their way to safety. As they battle treacherous conditions, journeying across a landscape they no longer recognise, the profound novelty of motherhood is brought into sharp focus.

It’s a moving, haunting film that feels scarily realistic. Not only are do we witness the family’s terror, despair even, they encounter other displaced people along the way, each of whom is struggling to adapt to the disintegrating world around them.

Jodie, who was involved in every stage of the film, told The Big Issue: “I felt the exploration of that environmental crisis was unique. We were exploring on a very human level, which really moved me – a lot more than a lot of films we’ve seen that maybe depict these kinds of happenings.

“The relationship women have with their body after they have a baby and how they feel transformed – we really explore that. And she’s going through all this in the midst of an environmental catastrophe.”
