Amandaland fans, tonight is the night! The hit Motherland spin-off is returning with a superb second series and we've got all the inside details, starting with the fact that Amanda's (Lucy Punch) mum, Felicity (Joanna Lumley) is about to have a very "charming encounter" with a new man. Oh, how we do like a surprise love interest!

When we meet Amanda again, she's finally starting to accept life in 'SoHa' and she's thrilled when a new hipster coffee shop opens in the area, believing it to be a step towards gentrification. But she's also got her sights set on bigger things in the form a new house. And then, of course, there's the small matter of her mum's new romance to deal with.

With the new series arriving on the BBC tonight, here's everything you need to know about it before you tune in, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.

The popular Motherland spin-off follows the titular Amanda (Lucy Punch) who we're re-introduced to post-divorce as she deals with less-than-ideal circumstances. Forced to leave her affluent lifestyle in Chiswick behind, Amanda downsizes and moves to South Harlesden, or as Amanda prefers to call it, ‘SoHa’.

Her children Manus and Georgie are now teenagers in secondary school, and we see her juggle all the chaos that comes with raising them, including social media worries, underage drinking and more. Amanda’s mother Felicity (Joanna Lumley), is ever present wit her cutting remarks and becomes increasingly involved in her life while expertly dodging the carer Amanda has arranged for her.

Although some of the main characters from Motherland don’t make an appearance in the spin-off, we’re treated to the return of Amanda’s long-suffering loyal friend and minion, Anne (Philippa Dunne). Amandaland also introduced some new faces, such as single dad Mal (Samuel Anderson), couple Della (Siobhán Mcsweeney) and Fi (Rochenda Sandall).

The second six-part series finds Amanda still living in ‘SoHa’ and juggling raising teenagers while working on her online Senuous brand. Resigned to staying in the area, she's thrilled by the opening of a hipster coffee shop which, to her mind, represents a step towards gentrification.

Amanda’s head is also about to be turned, not by a new man, but by discovering a big house in the area is up for sale. Desperate to own it, she turns to her mother, only to discover that getting Felicity on board financially comes at quite the price.

Fellow divorcee Mal is also still Amanda’s basement neighbour and there's still a touch of romance there. But we'll also be introduced to his ex, no-nonsense Abs, with whom Amanda struggles to connect.

Fortunately, Anne remains Amanda’s loyal and long-suffering best friend, who's there to listen to all her woes, and her musings on her mother's new romance. Speaking about her character’s love interest, Joanna Lumley, who plays Felicity, says: “It was a charming brief encounter.”

Lucy added of her character, Amanda’s, return: “Her change in circumstances has made her realise, finally, that she’s no better than anyone else. In Motherland, her superiority was her ugliest trait. Nevertheless, her giant ego and status anxiety remains, so she still wants everyone to think she’s the best!”

For a real laugh-out-loud series we'd recommend Am I Being Unreasonable?. The comedy thriller centres around Nic (Daisy Cooper), a mum stuck in a depressing marriage while grieving a loss she can’t share with anyone. When a new mum, Jen (Selin Hizli), arrives in town, the pair begin a friendship that exposes some dark secrets. Am I Being Unreasonable is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. Another brilliant series is Irish drama The Dry, which follows Shiv Sheridan (Róisín Gallagher), a recovering alcoholic who returns home for a clean slate - but life - and recovering - isn’t exactly easy with her dysfunctional family so close by. You can watch The Dry on ITVX.
