Brideshead Revisited
If you enjoyed The Great Gatsby, you'll enjoy the 2008 version of Brideshead Revisited. Based on Evelyn Waugh's 1945 novel, the film takes us back to 1925 Oxford, where undergraduate Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) is befriended by flamboyant aristocrat Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw), son of Lord and Lady Marchmain (Michael Gambon and Emma Thompson). During a visit to the sprawling Brideshead estate, Charles is beguiled by the lavish world of Sebastian's family and soon falls for his friend’s sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell). But as his connection with Sebastian and the family deepens, he finds himself at odds with the strong Roman Catholicism instilled in them by Lady Marchmain. Available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
Saving Mr. Banks
The Oscar-winning actress gives one of her most loved performances as P. L. Travers in 2013's Saving Mr. Banks. The biographical drama tells the story of the Mary Poppins author, portraying the many Hollywood meetings she had with Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks) who was desperate for the film rights to her books. Emma balances sharp wit with touching vulnerability as the film plays out the painful memories that inspired her books. Warm and nostalgic. Available to watch now on Disney+.
Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang
Nanny McPhee might seem like a surprise choice, but it gets top marks as far as family films go. In the sequel to the 2005 film, Emma's titular Nanny McPhee finds herself on exhausted mother Isabel Green’s (Maggie Gyllenhaal) doorstep, ready to practice her mystical powers on Isabel’s three children and their two spoiled city cousins. Expect a fun, light-hearted drama that’s worth watching if only to see Emma's dramatic physical transformation. Available to watch now on ITVX.
Burnt
For a classic - and easy to watch - redemption story, look no further than Burnt. The 2018 film centres on chef Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper), who's determined to rebuild his career after addiction derailed his life in Paris. Emma plays Dr. Rosshilde, the warm and charming therapist helping him deal with the pain he masks underneath perfectionism and she's as convincing as it gets. Alongside the fancy restaurant backdrop, Michelin-star pressure and tense kitchen scenes, the film asks a crucial question: is sheer talent enough to turn your life around? Available to watch on Netflix.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
Far from her role as the magical Nanny McPhee, this steamy 2o22 comedy drama stars Emma as Nancy, a retired schoolteacher embarking on a journey to fulfil her sexual bucket list she never got to enjoy. The film follows Nancy as she meets a sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) for a series of romps in a hotel room, and what starts as casual sex soon blossoms into deep conversations, amusing honesty and, most importantly, intimate human connection. Available to watch now on Channel 4.
