If you haven’t booked a holiday abroad yet and fancy an escape, we have the perfect getaway lined up – that is, if dark tourism is what you’re into. Suplex is a twisted new mystery series, coming to Channel 4 this week, which transports us to the atmospheric fictional town of Vesterlov in Denmark. But don’t be fooled by the picture-perfect scenery – there’s a darkness lingering in this genuinely brilliant crime drama.

The Nordic noir, which first aired in Denmark in 2023, kicks off with the close-knit community looking forward to a wresting tournament. Then one of the wrestlers is murdered – and his coach becomes the prime suspect. His wife, Charlotte (Josephine Park), starts her own investigation, but she’s hiding a secret of her own.

With the series available to stream this week on Channel 4, here’s everything you need to know about Suplex, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.

The thrilling four-part series, airing on Channel 4’s Walter Presents this week, centres around the idyllic small town of Vesterlov, a fictional Danish town. Morale is high as the community gather for a big wrestling tournament, but suddenly the excitement is shattered when a young, talented wrestler, Liam, is found brutally murdered and his coach, Lars (Jakob Cedergren) becomes the prime suspect.

Lars’s wife, Charlotte (Josephine Park), embarks on her own investigation to clear her husband’s name, but their already shaky marriage is put to the ultimate test. Can she believe her partner? Adding to the instability, Charlotte has her own secret – she’s having an affair with the police chief, the very man who’s spearheading the investigation to lock her husband away.

Soon, the town’s deeply buried secrets are unearthed, unravelling into a chilling whodunnit where every resident is a suspect. But is Lars actually responsible for the murder of his student? And will he find out about his wife’s infidelity?

Maj-Britt Landin, one of the show’s executive producers, shared how the series is so much more than a straightforward murder mystery. ‘On the surface, it’s a crime drama, but its complex layers require subtlety – a challenge that our team thrives on and looks forward to delivering in a series that will have viewers on binge mode,’ she told ZDF studios.

‘[Writers] Adam, Jens and Christian have done a superb job in creating a script that’s not only thought-provoking but keeps you in suspense until the very end,’ she added.

Yes - if you love a 'whodunnit' and the stylish tension of a Nordic noir, you'll be a fan of Suplex. For us, Josephine Park delivered the stand-out performance, she kept us guessing through out with her unpredictability and vulnerability. Furthermore, the show revolving around a wrestling game is also an unusual premise for a thriller and it introduced us to a whole new sporting universe - which we thoroughly enjoyed.

If you’re after another dark Walter Presents crime drama, but this time set in Germany, we’d suggest adding Hellground to your watchlist. When Dr Fabian Lambert (August Wittgenstein) moves to a sleepy village in Germany’s Black Forest, a series of mysterious murders unfold – but are they connected to his arrival? All episodes of Hellground are available to watch now on Channel 4. If you’re after something a lot cosier, we’d recommend Hudson & Rex. Detective Charlie Hudson (John Reardon) of the St John’s Major Crimes Unit and his impressive canine sidekick, German Shepherd Rex, team up to solve crimes – and they make quite the formidable duo. Hudson & Rex is available to stream now on U.
