Also known as The Vanishings, the six-part series, which premiered in Ireland in 2024, takes us to Dublin in the 1990s, and it’s inspired by a string of real-life disappearances at the time – although its plotline is fictional. The series follows brave journalist Lisa Wallace (India Mullen) who writes an article about her mother’s unsolved murder, which she witnessed as a child. The story sparks a new wave of interest in the case, and soon another young woman, Amy Reynolds (Gráinne Good) goes missing.

Lisa joins forces with Detective David Burkley (Allen Leech) to search for Amy, but their investigation grows quickly as more women disappear around Ireland, they’re certain they’re all linked to the same culprit. With every dead end and twisted game, the search gets more desperate, Lisa risks her own life as the killer targets her with psychological warfare, meanwhile David is blackmailed by a high-ranking detective as he threatens to expose corruption in the Gardaí (the Irish police force).

Is The Vanishing Triangle any good?

Yes – while it’s a harrowing watch, India Mullen delivers a compelling and emotional performance as the tenacious young reporter who will stop at nothing to save the victims. There are clear parallels to The Fall, when Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) hunts a serial killer operating in Belfast, and this is no coincidence since both dramas share the same executive producer. The media frenzy and community secrets echoes ITV’s Broadchurch, too. Add in red herrings, a suspenseful cat-and-mouse game and an unexpected ending – it’s impossible not to race through all six episodes.

For another Irish crime drama, we’d recommend Jack Taylor, which follows the eponymous detective, a self-destructive, heavy-drinking former Garda who becomes a private investigator in Galway – taking on the cases that others daren’t touch. Jack Taylor is available to watch now on ITVX. For an even more moving crime drama, we’d suggest Common, which tells the story of a vulnerable teenager Johnjo (Nico Mirallegro), who unwittingly gets caught up in a murder case after a fatal stabbing. You can watch Common now on the BBC.
