So, remotes at the ready, here’s our pick of seven fantastic Anna Maxwell Martin dramas to watch now on ITV, Netflix, the BBC and more.
And Then There Were None
The Agatha Christie adaptation that's even better than Ludwig tells the story of 10 strangers who find themselves on a so-called retreat on an isolated island off the Devon coast in 1939. Among them is the troubled housekeeper, Ethel Rogers (Anna Maxwell Martin). When a storm arrives and cuts them off from civilisation, the trip turns very sinister… A gramophone recording accuses the guests of all being responsible for a death they weren’t punished for. An eerie rhyme called ‘Ten Little Soldier Boys’ hangs in every room of the house, promising that each of the guests will die one by one – ending with the haunting words ‘and then there were none’. The question is, will any of them survive? And Then There Were None is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
Code 404
For something more light-hearted, Code 404 imagines a near future where technology can bring a murdered detective back from the dead. DI John Major (Daniel Mays) is revived through an experimental AI programme after he’s killed on duty – but there’s something awry with his new robo brain. Stephen Graham plays his long-suffering partner DI Roy Carver, who has an even bigger problem on his hands. While Major was dead, he started a relationship with Major’s wife, Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin). And the drama doesn’t stop there – the dysfunctional duo still have killers to catch… Code 404 is available to watch now on Prime Video.
The Bletchley Circle
This gripping mystery follows four women returning to civilian life after working during the Second World War at Bletchley Park, helping to crack Germany’s Enigma cypher. However, when Susan (Anna Maxwell Martin) spots a pattern in a series of female murders, she recruits her former friends and colleagues, Millie (Rachael Stirling), Jean (Julie Graham) and Lucy (Sophie Rundle) to put their extraordinary puzzle-solving skills back to work. The Bletchley Circle is available to watch now on Channel 4 and U.
Until I Kill You
Anna delivers one of her most emotionally charged performances yet in ITV’s four-part true crime drama about nurse Delia Balmer and construction worker John Sweeney (Shaun Evans), who meet in a Camden pub in the 1990s and begin a relationship. Sweeney soon becomes violent and abusive, while Delia finds herself dismissed by authorities – and her fight for justice is truly exceptional. Until I Kill You is available to watch now on ITVX.
Line Of Duty
No Anna Maxwell Martin round-up would be complete without Line Of Duty, the BBC’s epic police drama. The series follows the anti-corruption unit (AC-12), made up of investigators Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), Detective Inspector Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), which sniffs out corrupt cops. There are six series of the nail-biting drama, and Anna Maxwell Martin joins the fifth series as Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael, an icy senior who’s brought into investigate Ted – her grilling of him in the series 5 finale is one of the drama’s most memorable scenes. Line Of Duty is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
Hollington Drive
A seemingly idyllic family barbecue turns into every parent’s worst nightmare in Hollington Drive. The four-part drama begins with sisters Theresa (Anna Maxwell Martin) and Helen (Rachael Stirling) enjoying a summer evening with their families. Theresa starts to feel tense when their children decide they want to go to play at the park. When they don’t arrive home on time, her instincts tell her something terrible has happened… Hollington Drive is available to watch now on Acorn TV via Prime Video.
Midwinter Of The Spirit
For something altogether more mind-bending, this supernatural thriller follows Merrily Watkins (Anna), a widowed vicar who works as an exorcist. The police turn to Merrily for help with a gruesome murder investigation, and she turns to the supernatural to help – but the investigation starts to put pressure on both her faith and her family. Dark, eerie and unsettling, it’s Anna Maxwell Martin as we’ve never seen her before. Midwinter Of The Spirit is available to watch now on Netflix and ITVX.
