Two weeks after their daughter’s arrival, Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have revealed the name of their baby – along with the beautiful meaning behind it.
The Royal posted on Instagram that her first daughter is named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Adelaide, who was born on 3 August 2026 at 6.20pm in a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, will be little sister to two brothers; five-year-old August Philip Hawke Brooksbank and three-year-old Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank.
Eugenie captioned a sweet photo of Adelaide sleeping with: ‘2 weeks ago today, we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time. We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.’
You’ll note that Eugenie herself flagged the moving tribute her daughter’s name pays to members of the family. While the middle name Elizabeth is, of course, a nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II, Adelaide was the name of the German-born wife of King William IV, who served as Queen consort in the UK in the 1800s. Queen Adelaide was known for her charitable work and her appreciation of the arts.
The name Adelaide is also linked to Portugal, where the family have a home and where their daughter was born. Maria Adelaide of Portugal was Princess of Braganza and lived to 100 before passing away in 2012. Maria Adelaide was also the name of a highly-revered but uncanonised saint in Portugal, who dedicated her life to helping others.
The newest member of the Royal family’s second middle name, Annina, doesn’t appear to be connected to Royal lineage, but instead a tribute to someone close to Eugenie and Jack in their personal lives. It’s a name with Italian and Hebrew roots and is said to signify grace. It’s also associated with Italian opera, as Annina is a character in La Traviata.
The Princess’s announcement has been flooded with well wishes from Royal fans, with one comment calling Adelaide’s name a ‘wonderful and proper tribute’ to the late Queen. Another said: ‘A beautiful name to match a beautiful daughter’.
