It’s been a while since The One That Got Away first arrived on our screens – and we were losing hope that the series would ever return. Now, the BBC (and the Welsh channel S4C) has made Christmas come early with the surprise announcement of a second series – and it promises to be truly unmissable.
For those who don’t know, the English-language crime drama The One That Got Away, also filmed in Welsh as Cleddau, follows ex-lovers DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) and DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington) who are forced to reunite when the murder of a young nurse bears chilling similarities to a historic case. Set against the rugged backdrop of the Welsh coastline, it makes for a binge-worthy watch – think Keeping Faith meets Unforgotten.

What is The One That Got Away about?
The first series, which first aired on BBC One Wales in 2025, takes us to the fictional coastal town of Pembroke Dock where we meet DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) as she returns from Cardiff to investigate the murder of a student nurse. If the case wasn’t complicated enough, she’s paired with her former fiancé DS Rich Sheldon (Richard Harrington), who’s married to Helen Sheldon (Rhian Blythe).
The case has striking similarities to the killings of nurses that left a frightening grip on the town years earlier, raising two frightening possibilities: either a copycat killer is on the loose or the wrong person was convicted. Across the six episodes, the couples’ personal history becomes increasingly tangled with the investigation as buried secrets resurface, and all the drama culminates in a heart-racing finale.
What will happen in The One That Got Away series 2?
The six-part second series will follow the same detective duo for another twisted investigation when a body is discovered in Cleddau River. The team suspect the killer is using a dating website to lure in victims – the very one that Ffion has been using to look for a new romance. No spoilers, but after the first series’ explosive ending, can the ex-lovers tackle another case without their chequered pasts interfering?

Yes – The One That Got Away has the same ingredients that make Keeping Faith and Unforgotten so gripping: complicated relationships, buried secrets and double lives. The rugged Pembrokeshire coastline gives the same ominous edge that made Keeping Faith so distinctive and the re-opening of a cold case echoes Unforgotten. But it’s the unresolved feelings between Ffion and Rich that set this crime drama apart – their ‘Will they? Won’t they?’ conundrum is every bit as compelling as the mystery they’re attempting to solve.
