The five-part series follows MI6’s rising star Adam Lawrence (Charlie Cox) who’s placed in charge of the organisation after his boss, Sir Martin Angelis (Ciarán Hinds), is poisoned. His new responsibility comes with close surveillance and suspicion, as his colleagues start to believe he's a double agent.

His former flame Kara Yerzova (Olga Kurylenko), who is a Russian spy, returns to his life and more chaos follows. Why has the mysterious Kara returned? And why is she suddenly so invested in her ex’s promotion?

A messy triangle emerges, with Adam’s devoted wife and the stepmother of his two children Maddy de Costa (Oona Chaplin) demanding answers. Maddy, an ex-army boss, inadvertently gets caught up in the investigation when her old friend, CIA agent Dede Alexander (Tracy Ifeachor), is tasked with looking into Adam.

Describing what sets the show apart from other spy sagas, Charlie Cox previously told Radio Times: ‘Despite what the trailer might suggest, because a trailer is a trailer, there's not a huge amount of action in the show, actually,’ he said. ‘A lot of it is dealing with the relationships with Adam's wife and his children and the pressures for someone who lives and works in that world, especially when they come under fire, especially when there's extreme adversity.’

For a thrilling series based on real events, we’d recommend Legends, which follows a 1990s top-secret operation led by former undercover officer Don (Steve Coogan). He must recruit a team of ordinary Customs employees to infiltrate Britain’s criminal underworld. Legends is available to watch now on Netflix. For another brilliant spy thriller, we’d suggest Secret Service, which stars Gemma Arterton as Kate Henderson, a senior MI6 agent who soon finds herself tangled up in a web of destruction. All episodes of Secret Service are available to stream now on ITV.
