Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to lead a double life and go undercover? While we eagerly await the return of Slow Horses, there’s another series that provides a fascinating portrayal of what it’s like to go undercover – and it’s based on a true story. Netflix’s Legends tells the little-known story of 1990s Customs employees turned undercover agents . After a thrilling first series, they’re returning to our screens for an epic second instalment of what has been hailed the best series since Slow Horses.
The drama, which first aired earlier this year, follows a top-secret operation led by former undercover officer Don (Steve Coogan). He is tasked with recruiting a team of ordinary Customs employees to infiltrate Britain’s criminal underworld as her Majesty’s Customs and Excise is losing its battle against drug smuggling. Series 1 sees them risk everything to go undercover. Now, they’re going back into the shadows for an entirely new mission.
With the second series confirmed by Netflix, here’s everything you need to know about Legends series 2, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Legends about?
Inspired by a remarkable true story, the six-part series tells the remarkable story of a 1990s drug-busting investigation carried out by a group of Customs workers. Former undercover officer Don Clark (Steve Coogan) recruits Guy (Tom Burke), Kate (Hayley Squires), Bailey (Aml Ameen) and Erin (Jasmine Blackborow) as they infiltrate one of the country’s most prolific criminal drug gangs to take them down from the inside. But these infiltrators are not trained spies – they’re ordinary men and women who are navigating the unfamiliar pressure of living a double life.
Guy (Tom Burke) is the lead infiltrator, who works as a Customs officer at Heathrow before he must adopt the role of a professional drugs courier. As he delves deeper into the underworld, he finds it harder to separate his legend from his true identity – straining his family life and marriage.
What will happen in Legends series 2?
The end of series 1 sees the legends return to their everyday lives after a successful mission, where they took on a criminal operation led by the Liverpool gang leader Carter (Tom Hughes) and Turkish kingpin Hakan (Numan Acar). However, just when they thought they could go back to their daily lives, the team are returning to their legendary roles with a whole new case – and the outside world are still non-the-wiser.
What to read next
The series creator, Neil Forsyth, has shared his excitement for the upcoming series: ‘I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tell a new story in the fascinating and unique world that Legends offers,’ he told Netflix, ‘and to show just how dangerous, thrilling and important their work became in the late 1990s.’
Who’s in the cast of Legends series 2?
So far, Netflix has confirmed the return of three of the original cast members for Legends series 2, which includes:
- Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Souvenir) as Guy
- Steve Coogan (Philomena, The Reckoning) as Don
- Hayley Squires (Beau Is Afraid, I, Daniel Blake) as Kate
We're hopeful the following series 1 cast members will also return, which includes:
- Charlotte Ritchie (You, Ghosts) as Sophie
- Aml Ameen (A Man in Full) as Bailey
- Jasmine Blackborow (The Gentlemen, Marie Antoinette) as Erin
- Douglas Hodge (Joker) as Blake
- Gerald Kyd (The Assassin) as Mylonas
Is Legends any good?
Yes – it’s a fascinating story that most of us have never heard of before, offering a glimpse into how a group of ordinary people took on an entire criminal network. There are clear parallels with Apple TV’s hit spy drama Slow Horses – from Neil Forsyth’s witty writing and band of unconventional operatives to the way both dramas explore the psychological toll that living a double life can have on individuals. Legends also has an extra layer of intrigue as it was inspired by true events!
