A round of applause is in order for Carol Vorderman, who was awarded an outstanding honour this week. There to cheer his mum on was Carol’s son, Cameron King, who made a rare red-carpet appearance alongside her to celebrate her latest achievement.
Carol Vorderman was at the 2026 BAFTA Cymru (the Welsh version of the awards) in Newport, Wales, on Sunday (4 March) to receive a very special honour. The broadcaster and presenter grew up in Prestatyn, Wales, and was awarded the ‘BAFTA Cymru Siân Phillips Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television’. The prize honours Carol’s long and successful career in television and is one of BAFTA Cymru’s highest honours.
Accompanying Carol for the special occasion was her now 34-year-old son, Cameron, who beamed alongside his mum as the pair walked into the event at International Convention Centre in Newport, Wales. By our calculations, it’s been 15 years since he last joined his mum for a red-carpet appearance at a major awards event.
In a speech on the night, Carol paid tribute to her former maths teacher with a charming anecdote, crediting him with teaching her about activism. Carol said her teacher would ‘sometimes miss lessons because he was appearing before magistrates after painting over road signs’ with his wife. This was in protest that there weren’t any signs in the Welsh language at that time, according to nation.cymru. ‘I was born in 1960 and I grew up in a time when we didn’t have Welsh road signs,’ Carol told the audience. ‘Does anyone else remember?’
The last time Cameron attended a glittering event with his mum was back in 2021 for the Pride of Britain Awards, which was held at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London. On that occasion, Cameron was also joined by his sister, Katie, so Carol was able to have both her children there to support her. The family trio also arrived together for the same event in 2017.
The 35th BAFTA Cymru Awards are the biggest annual celebration of creative excellence across film and television in Wales. This year, the event was hosted by Welsh TV presenter Owain Wyn Evans.
