BBC

Top of our list of murder mysteries to watch this weekend is a drama we think is as good as Midsomer Murders. The BBC’s classic, based on Margery Allingham's novels, transports us to England in the 1930s and follows the upstanding Albert Campion (Peter Davison) and his ex-burglar manservant Magersfontein Lugg (Brian Glover). Lugg's criminal contacts prove invaluable as they investigate the dark side of England's high society, as does Campion's social standing. They travel across the country in Campion's red open-top sports car solving a slew of weird and wonderful cases. Available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.

Meanwhile, her estranged husband, Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), grows suspicious of her involvement and launches an investigation of his own. A whodunnit round-up would not be complete without Agatha Christie. The two-part adaptation takes us to a train in 1954 England, where Luke Fitzwilliam (David Jonsson) meets Miss Pinkerton (Penelope Wilton), who tells him a killer is on the loose in her quiet village of Wychwood under Ashe. Miss Pinkerton is travelling to Scotland Yard to report the murderer, but before she gets there, she is killed. Luke takes it upon himself to track down the culprit before they can strike again. One Agatha Christie mystery simply isn't enough! The series takes us back to 1939 where ten strangers find themselves at a so-called retreat in a house on an island off the coast of Devon. Among the guests are reckless playboy Anthony (Douglas Booth), troubled housekeeper Ethel Rogers (Anna Maxwell Martin) and shady soldier Philip Lombard (Aidan Turner). However, a ferocious storm cuts them off from civilisation and things take an even creepier turn when a gramophone recording accuses each guest of being responsible for a death they escaped punishment for. Available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.

The Final Problem

Now we're travelling back in time to 1959 to meet a Spanish Sherlock Holmes. The murder mystery follows Basil (Jose Coronado), a fading actor best-known for playing the British detective. His trip to Mallorca turns disastrous when a storm hits, stranding holidaymakers in a hotel. But things escalate when a British tourist is killed and he’s forced to reprise his role as the lead investigator in a real-life whodunit – with each of the holidaymakers becoming a prime suspect. Available to watch now on Netflix.

However, the closer they become, the more Iris starts to uncover about her father’s mysterious past with Victor. Available to watch now on Channel 4.

Series 1 sees Karen reopen the case of Rosie Duff, a student who was murdered 25 years ago, with a true-crime podcast reigniting public interest. Series 2 picks up with Karen tasked with revisiting the perplexing kidnapping of heiress Catriona Grant (Julia Brown) and her son. But can Karen cope with the media frenzy that comes with reopening the investigation? Available to watch now on ITVX.

Only Murders In The Building

Hulu

This Hollywood hit is essential viewing. Hulu’s comedy follows unlikely sleuthing trio Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), who launch a true-crime podcast after a suspicious death in their swanky New York apartment building. Since then, the series has attracted huge names, from Meryl Streep to Paul Rudd. Now is the perfect time to catch up, with series 6 taking the mystery to London for the first time and introducing Olivia Colman to the cast. We cannot wait. Available to watch now on Disney+.
