If there’s one staple the Princess of Wales relies on when it comes to official engagements, it’s a blazer. Whether worn as a part of a sharp suit for an important meeting on her early years work, or a tennis-white jacket over a polka dot skirt at Wimbledon, Kate has the formula nailed.

Kate has worn a blazer in huge range of colours, most usually opting for block hues in deep or neutral tones. And if she does decide to go for a pattern, it has to be check. There is one particular check the Princess has turned to over the years, however, which has special significance for a number of reasons. That would be the ‘glen plaid’, which is also known as the ‘Prince of Wales check'.

In October, Kate wore a Prince of Wales check blazer to RAF Coningsby, pairing it with classic t-shirt. She also wore the print back in March, during a visit to the Bermondsey Beer Mile in London.

Not only is the pattern a classic, heritage design, but it also references the title she has shared with her husband, Prince William since 2022 (awarded by King Charles once the late Queen Elizabeth II passed) when the couple became the Prince and Princess of Wales. However, the look also pays homage to a previous Princess of Wales – Kate's late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Princess Diana also relied on the trusty check, and wore a strikingly similar grey blazer to the most recent jacket worn by Kate, back in 1989. Princess Diana was attending the Burghley Horse trials and, like Kate, paired her blazer with a classic t-shirt.

The good news is, that you don’t need to be awarded the title of Prince or Princess of Wales to be able to wear a similar check blazer. In fact, Nobody’s Child’s ‘Checked Double Breasted Blazer’ is now on sale, reduced from £149 to £74 at M&S:
