Sweet Magnolias returned for season 5 on June 11, 2026, on Netflix, and fans have been eager to see what the Magnolias have been up to. The last time we tuned in, we saw Maddie Townsend-Wilcox (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) navigate new stages of love and heartbreak. What’s more, fans got to see the next generation of Serenity and their relationships, both platonic and romantic.
Speaking of the younger folks on Sweet Magnolias, fans were shocked to learn about a casting shakeup for season 5. As it turns out, Carson Rowland, who plays Maddie’s son, Tyler “Ty” Townsend, didn’t return to the Netflix drama—and we may have figured out what happened.
Why did Carson Rowland leave Sweet Magnolias as Ty Townsend?
While the reason behind Carson’s exit is unclear, Sweet Magnolias showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson confirmed the news to Us Weekly in late May. At the time, Sheryl said Carson made the “decision” to leave the show ahead of season 5, and promised that Sweet Magnolias would offer a way to acknowledge his absence.
“In his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation and look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream,” she explained to the outlet.
Fans may remember that season 4 of Sweet Magnolias saw Ty finally get into a romantic relationship with his best friend, Annie Sullivan (Anneliese Judge). Additionally, he faced many big choices after the death of his father, Bill Townsend (Chris Klein). Should he pursue his love of music and tour the world with his band, or should he stay in Serenity and let his new relationship blossom? And let’s not forget—this all coincided with Ty asking Annie to defer college and go to Europe with him on tour.
Fans also discovered that Ty’s absence takes a toll on more than just Annie in Sweet Magnolias season 5. His choosing to check out for some of his family’s most important moments left everyone feeling resentful.
Although we’ll have to wait until Sweet Magnolias season 5 returns, there may be some clues as to what led to Carson’s exit. The actor and his wife, Maris, welcomed their first child in 2023. Fans also seem to think Carson is set to join the hit Amazon Prime Video drama Off Campus for season 2, but that’s not exactly confirmed at the moment.
When Good Housekeeping spoke to JoAnna (who plays Ty’s mom, Maddie) in early June, we asked about Carson’s exit.
“I just love Carson so much, and I actually just talked to him last week,” she told us over Zoom. “But Ty’s absence really allows Maddie to have these new experiences that I hope people will be excited about and come along for the journey. And who knows? If we get a sixth season, maybe we’ll see Carson again.”
