Yes, we’re firmly in June, but as we all know, in the UK the arrival of summer doesn’t mean we’ve seen the end of grey skies, torrential rain, and chilly temperatures. It’s why layering is the fashion skill every Brit needs and why neutral staples that can be mixed, matched, and thrown on top are an absolute must.
One such staple is, of course, the trench coat. Demonstrating this perfectly is Cat Deeley, who shared a photo on Instagram of an outfit combination we can all recreate with ease. That combo is a pair of wide-leg indigo jeans, a cream rollneck jumper, black accessories, and the hero piece of a trench coat.
This is an easy daytime ensemble that instantly makes the wearer look pulled together, and is a solid example of the ‘sandwich method’ – where you use two or more pieces in the same colour as the bread in a sandwich, with other colours in between. Here, Cat’s using black as the sandwich’s bread, seen in her boots, handbag, luggage bag, and sunglasses. Easy-peasy.
Want to recreate the look? We believe the exact coat is the Bree classic long trench coat from Levi’s, which is still in stock and available for £170, but there are whole load of similar options available on the high street that might take your fancy.
Cat has previously worn this trench coat by DKNY, which she featured in her edit for Frasers. It's got sizeable lapels and black buttons for a sophisticated finish. Plus, it's currently on sale.
Another great option is the Skylar trench coat from Hobbs. This has a shower-resistant finish on the fabric, so it's ideal for the UK's rain showers.
Of course M&S has an excellent trench on offer. This one has a classic double-breasted style, is made from premium, shower-resistant cotton twill, and is under £100.
Finally, this Whistles option is also on sale and has a really lovely flow to it thanks to the lightweight fabric. With more than £50 off, now's a great time to buy.
Whichever trench you go for, you're on to a winner. This coat style is always in fashion (go back decade by decade and you'll keep seeing variations on it) and as well as being practical, it looks just as fantastic over a floral dress as it does with jeans and a white T-shirt. Take note from how Cat's styled it or go ahead and bring in bolder colours like red or on-trend cobalt blue. You really can't go wrong.
