With decades of experience navigating the tough industry of Hollywood, running her production company Hello Sunshine and raising three kids, Reese Witherspoon is someone whose advice we'll eagerly take. She has wisdom in all sorts of areas, from literary recommendations via Reese’s Book Club to how women can find empowerment in business and tech.
Handy, then, that over the weekend Reese packaged up some of her best life-changing lessons in one place. On her Instagram, the actress shared five things she wishes every woman knew, writing in the caption: ‘I’ve been thinking about the advice that’s stayed with me over the years… sharing a few of those thoughts today.’
The advice, as you’d expect, is excellent – and exactly what women of all ages probably need to hear. Let’s break down those five things Reese wants us to know:
1. Don’t wait for permission
‘No one is going to care about your dream more than you do. If you want something, start building it.’
2. Confidence comes from doing
What to read next
‘You don’t have to feel ready. Most of the things I’m proudest of started before I knew what I was doing.’
3. Choose your people wisely
‘Surround yourself with people who lift you up, tell you the truth and encourage you to grow.’
4. Learn how things work
‘Understand the business, ask questions and stay curious. Knowledge is power.’
5. Keep moving forward
‘You’ll make mistakes. Learn from them, then leave them in the rearview mirror.’
All solid life tips, right? Clearly Reese’s celeb pals agreed, with multiple showing their support by liking and commenting on the post. Natalie Portman wrote a straight-to-the-point ‘Love this!’, Octavia Spencer commented ‘Yesssssss!’ and Viola Davis responded with two clapping emojis and two hearts.
This is far from the first time Reese Witherspoon has offered up life advice. Back in April, she shared an Instagram post rounding up what she had learned from playing some of her most iconic characters – and the lessons were relevant for all of us.
Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods taught her that ‘You don't have to change who you are to be taken seriously’, while June Carter Cash from Walk The Line taught her to ‘Live life on your own terms... even when it’s not easy’. Reese’s role as Tracy Flick in Election made her realise that ‘People will have a lot to say about you, but always work hard and go after what you want’. Playing Cheryl Strayed in Wild taught her ‘You can be completely broken and still find your way back to yourself’. She learned from Bradley Jackson in The Morning Show to have the courage ‘to say things out loud that most people are too scared to admit’. And even super type-A Madeline Mackenzie in Big Little Lies had wisdom to impart: ‘At some point, you realise you don’t have to be perfect to be happy’.
Reese is currently in full promo mode for new tv show Elle, which follows Elle Woods (played by Lexi Minetree) trying to navigate high school in the 90s. Here’s hoping she manages to keep finding time to share game-changing life tips in the meantime. We need them.
