We’ve been absolutely spoilt with sweet insights into the marriage of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, recently. In the last few weeks alone, we’ve learned how Catherine’s dad knew William wanted to marry her, witnessed the couple bantering with bystanders at Royal Ascot, heard Kate affirming her love for her husband in an offhand comment, and spied the pair sharing an umbrella at the wedding of Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling.

And that’s on top of the lovely message Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis shared for both Father’s Day and their dad’s birthday, signed off by Kate.

Now, a Royal insider has piped up to reiterate how great a couple the Prince and Princess of Wales truly are, sharing that the two remind him of his own mum and dad.

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton has some hefty credentials in being a Royal insider. He had the high honour of serving as equerry to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in the 80s, before serving in the armed forces for many years. He went on to become the private secretary to Prince William and Prince Harry, and, later, Catherine too, functioning as both a personal advisor and the chief of staff. Lowther-Pinkerton resigned in 2013, but stayed close to the family, even coming out of retirement to look after his godson, Prince George, and all the other young royals at the King’s coronation in 2023.

It’s safe to say he knows the Royal Family rather well. In an interview with The Times, Jamie, who is now an author, shared that he ‘loved’ both William and Harry, dearly cherishing his work guiding the princes through their military careers for almost a decade – a time he described as ‘huge fun’. He calls both princes ‘brave guys’, noting that ‘when they were soldiers, it was important they did it right and properly’.

Lowther-Pinkerton was also roped in to help organise William and Kate’s wedding back in 2011, and went on to be an essential source of support for Kate as she adapted to becoming part of the Royal Family. He’s clearly been a fan of the Princess of Wales since then, as he told The Times: ‘She’s a really cool woman. Amazing. He chose well. I think they’ll be like my mum and dad. I think they’re great.’

The Princess of Wales is also described as ‘so sweet’, as the author recounted a time when, on an official engagement, she went to greet him with a kiss. ‘I nearly headbutted her,’ Jamie says. ‘I didn’t know if I should be bowing.’

Long before this, Lowther-Pinkerton also spent time with a different Princess of Wales – Princess Diana, who he calls ‘such a breath of fresh air’. ‘This was in 1984, 1985,’ he explains. ‘I sat next to her at lunch and she was great. She was a sort of really buzzy live wire. I loved all of the Queen Mother’s very cool friends, but they were in their 80s. [Diana] was someone different.’
