Every fall, plaid finds its way back into our wardrobes. The pattern is timeless, but each season brings a fresh take. It seems more prominent than ever this year; in fact, Kate Middleton was seen wearing a plaid skirt during an outing in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The Princess of Wales thoughtfully paired it with a pussy bow blouse and a long, black coat, creating a fall look that’s equally preppy and comfortable (a formula Kate has perfected). Her coat looks to be a custom piece by Alexander McQueen, and she accessorized with a purse she’s been photographed wearing for years—an Amberley Satchel from British luxury brand, Mulberry.
Now for the skirt: it comes from New Zealand-based designer Emilia Wickstead, whom Kate has worn regularly for more than a decade. It’s made with Shetland wool—and the pattern features an earth-toned color combo of military green, beige, and black.
Her exact piece is no longer available, but I found a few similar options that’ll help you replicate her look for less.
If you’ve been keeping up with the royal as much as we’ve been, you probably know this isn’t the first time Kate’s worn plaid (or Emilia Wickstead) in public. In fact, she’s been seen on multiple occasions wearing it—most prominently around Christmastime.
Kate has made tartan something of a signature. In December 2024, she wore an Emilia Wickstead skirt with festive pops of red. The following year, she took the trend one step further, layering a brown tartan skirt beneath a coordinating plaid coat for a look that felt cohesive without being too matchy.
However you choose to style your skirt, you'll channel the kind of timeless style Kate Middleton makes look so effortless.
